A Celtic-daft Dundee couple celebrated St Patrick’s Day in a unique way by getting married in their Celtic strips.
Steve Petrie, in the famous hooped home jersey, and Jacqui Greig, in the yellow away top, tied the knot at the Dundee Registry Office today with guests encouraged to come in Celtic gear or at least in something green.
Steve, 46, a labourer, said: “It’s been a great day, absolutely brilliant.
“The weather’s great too I’m just glad it wasn’t raining.”
Jacqui was glad to get through her nerves and looking forward to the reception at the Bank Bar in the city centre.
She said: “Beforehand I was nervous but I’m okay now!
“I had some champagne this morning.
“It’s been a nightmare getting everything organised.
“He’s having a Guinness but I think I’ll just have champagne.”
The couple became an internet sensation when the Tele broke the news of their plans for the big day last month.
Over 45,000 people read the story and watched the video of the pair on theTele.co.uk.
The couple were amazed at how much publicity their special day had gotten since.
Steve said: “It’s been good, there’s been lots of friends saying stuff after it was in the paper.
“I didn’t expect it to be publicised so much, there’s been radio and TV as well as the papers.
“It’s been a good response.
“I wouldn’t be surprised now after us getting married in Celtic tops that other football fans do the same, not in Celtic tops but in other teams’ tops.
“It’s different – you see people getting married at Parkhead in suits and stuff but we thought we’d be different.
“It’s St Patrick’s Day as well and that’s the icing on the cake.”
The cake in question at the reception was baked in the shape of a shamrock with the newlywed’s names iced on top.
Jayne Allen, the registrar who conducted the wedding, said: “We’ve definitely not had football strips before.
“We’ve had plenty of themed weddings but not one like this.”
Word of the wedding also reached Celtic Park, and current captain Scott Brown sent his congratulations to Jacqui and Steve.
He said: “We have heard about the big day today.
“Jacqueline and Steve are obviously huge fans of the club and we wish them all the very best we hope they have a great wedding day.”
When asked if winning the league or getting married Steve replied: “Oh, probably winning the league.”
The best man, Darren Petrie – Steve’s brother – was also kitted out in his Celtic top and was pleased about how the day had gone.
He said: “I thought it was a good day.
“I was a bit shocked at first when he told me about the Celtic strips but I got used to it. Most of the family is Celtic so it’s all worked out.
“It’s been really strange all the attention they’ve got. They get on great, definitely a great couple – they both like the same things and I think they’ll be good together.”
