Dundee striker Craig Beattie has given John Brown a fitness boost ahead of Saturday’s crunch game away to Championship leaders Hamilton.
The 29-year-old frontman, who has netted three goals in nine starts, has been absent from the Dark Blues starting XI since the 2-1 reverse at Livingston.
But Bomber, desperate for his players to get their promotion chase back on track, will throw ex-Scotland international Beattie back into battle this weekend at New Douglas Park.
“He’s back in full training and he is looking sharp,” said the manager.
“Beattie has had a week’s rest, which he needed, and now he’s definitely back in contention to start on Saturday.
“He had been suffering from the same problem he had last year at St Johnstone it’s to do with his nervous system.
“But last year he got an injection in his back which saw him return to fitness. He’s had the same one again.
“Hopefully, that has done the trick for him.
“Beattie definitely could have added something last weekend he has a good physical strength about him.
“Yesterday was his first day back and he really looked the part.”
With top scorer Peter MacDonald unlikely to relinquish his place in the first team, it seems Craig Wighton will be the one to make way for the return of the former Celtic, Hearts and St Johnstone man.
However, Bomber does not think that is any slight on the 16-year-old, who the manager has been impressed with in recent weeks.
“Saturday was another game under his belt,” said Bomber.
“It was a hustle-and-bustle kind of game and probably that didn’t really suit him.
“I’ve not had to throw him in, it’s never been a case of that. He’s proven in training he’s more than a match for the strikers we have here.
“I think young Craig is just learning the game.
“What he’s learning is that it’s a big physical jump from youth football to seniors.
“In a year’s time you’ll see a big difference in him.”
This week, Willie Dyer has also returned to full training after a lengthy lay-off.
The Accies game is expected to come too soon for him, with the trip to Morton next week more likely.
