Dundee medical practitioners are urging elderly residents and other at-risk individuals to visit their local GP and have a free flu shot before winter sets in.
The vaccine is available free to pregnant women, unpaid careers, healthcare workers, people over the age of 65 and other at-risk individuals. At-risk groups include under-65s with long-term health conditions such as diabetes, asthma and other lung, heart and liver conditions.
NHS Tayside Public Health Consultant Dr Daniel Chandler said the flu “can be a serious illness, even in fit, healthy people”. He added: “It makes people feel extremely unwell for many days and full recovery normally takes a week. For those in at-risk groups, complications of flu can be deadly. The best way to be protected is to get the jab and the earlier the better.”
