A run-down former Dundee nightclub is set to gain a new lease of life with plans for it to reopen this spring.
The Cotton Club on Brown Street has lain empty for nearly seven years after closing its doors in 2006.
But now two local businessman have applied to Dundee City Council for a brand new license to operate a nightclub from the premises once again.
A decision from the licensing board is expected next month and if all goes to plan Ralph Berg and Scott Robertson are hoping to open Karma by the end of March.
Ralph said: “We began work on the building last week and are aiming for March 15 but might run a little later than that. We are working with the licensing board to acquire the necessary documents and everything seems to be going well.”
The club will target an “older clientele”, which is a group that Ralph said has been neglected in Dundee.
He said: “Karma is going to be a club aimed at over 21s. There will be a smart-casual dress code at the weekends.
“On a Friday we are going to have club classics from the nineties.
“We are targeting the older clientele who will appreciate that type of music and atmosphere. But we will also be running nights throughout the week for students with special promotions.”
The club will also operate a “non-glass bar” policy to ensure a safer clubbing experience.
Ralph said: “All drinks are of main line brands and we are working with the Bottle Stop campaign to incorporate a non-glass bar.
“We are using containers made from a hard polycarbonate to serve drinks.”
Ralph used to own Dundee nightspot Rudi’s, just off Albert Square, which specialised in putting on Northern Soul and Ska club nights.
However, although he hopes to incorporate those genres into Karma, the new Brown Street venue will focus on dance anthems and funky house.
The club will also feature a VIP area with “intimate” seating beside the DJ booth as well as table service.
The Cotton Club has become run down and dilapidated since shutting up shop in 2006. However workmen have already moved to give it a fresh lick of paint and carry out refurbishment of the interior.
