I find it incredible that Dundee City Council has agreed to the Dundee Taxi Association’s view that drivers should receive fare increases of 7% — when their own recommendation was between 3-4%, still ahead of the recognised levels of inflation.
And before the hard-done by taxi drivers jump on the bandwagon — I know of some drivers who can earn between £600-£800 for two 12-hour shifts over the weekend.
I was astonished that this figure was accepted in these hard-pressed times. Are we seriously to believe that when the council sets the next round of Council Tax levels, that we, the Dundee people, can make counter suggestions to have that rate lowered?
Why don’t we form a Dundee People’s Association and use that sway of public opinion to engineer rates of levy or charges to suit our own interests? — Vote For Change.
Stairway to danger
Who was the bright spark that came up with the idea to put stairs leading from the Lloyds TSB bank in Lochee straight into the road?
To make it worse people (even regular customers to the bank) forget they are walking right into the road because it looks more like a pavement instead of a road at this bit now so you are more likely to keep walking without realising you are on the road.
I have seen many customers doing this, myself included, and with small children. — Reader.
Barrier needed
I write regarding the new road layout in Lochee at the Lloyds TSB bank.
I was coming out of the bank with my son, only to be nearly run over from a passing car.
There is no marking for a path and it is very dangerous for people coming out of the bank.
I feel there should be a barrier or a fence to show at least drivers how near they can drive to the entrance. — Tracy Fraser.
Troop withdrawal will not save cash
America’s most senior general in Afghanistan has warned of a big surge in Taliban attacks as the date for troop withdrawal approaches.
Ending operations will mean President Obama coming good on an election promise.
But, as sure as night follows day, this will have a destabilising effect in the area, a void that will be filled by the Taliban who could potentially quickly assume control. One of their first actions may be to re-start Afghanistan’s hugely lucrative drugs industry to raise funds for operations across the region and the world.
The US will need the resources saved on weaponry and ordnance to tackle the inevitable increase in drug activity on their streets. — Observer, Dundee.
Secrets of ham and eggy
Before the Tipperary (Athol Street, Lochee} was razed to the ground, there was a corrugated building on Ann Street that met up with Maloney's park. It was known locally as the "Ham and Eggy."
I'm hoping some of your readers can recall why that building was so named? — Ex Lochee.
