SCOTTISH CUP WON BY FINTRY IS NOW ON SHOW IN THE HAMPDEN PARK MUSEUM

Just when I was beginning to think no-one would respond to my plea for a List of non-professional football teams from Dundee who have won the Scottish Cup, up popped my old friend DAVE PULLAR.

In response to the request by JIM MASON (BwB, July 16), Dave has supplied a list of Dundee Juvenile and Dundee Sunday Boys League teams which have won the national trophy up to season 1991-92.

The Scottish Juvenile Cup (U/27 senior) — Lochee Renton (64-65, 66-67), Maryfield United (67-68), Fairfield (76-77, 78-79), Dee Club (83-84), Royals (85-86, 86-87, 89-90), Dundee United SC (87-88, 88-89), Fintry Juveniles (90-91).

“From 1985 to 1991, the trophy was competed for only by Dundee and Perth teams as there were no other U/27 Leagues in Scotland,” explained Dave, who is now back in the Dundee and District Youth FA set-up as Friendly League match secretary.

“Fintry were the last winners and the trophy now sits in the Hampden Park museum.”

U/18 Scottish Cup winners:

Fintry Juveniles (1980-81), Dee Club (86-87, 88-89, 89-90), Maryfield United (no year submitted).

U/16 Scottish Cup winners:

Strathtay (77-78), Dundee Celtic (79-80), St Columba (80-81), Fairmuir (82-83, 86-87, 91-92), Royals (83-84), Muirfield Boys (85-86), Dee Club (87-88, 88-89).

U/15 Scottish Cup winners:

Dundee Celtic (78-79, 79-80, 81-82), Fairmuir (80-81, 89-90, 98-99), Royals (82-83), Muirfield Boys (84-85), Vale of Tay (85-86), Dee Club (86-87, 87-88),

U/14 Scottish Cup winners:

Dundee Celtic (77-78, 98-99), Muirfield Boys (83-84), Broughty United (85-86), Dee Club (86-87, 88-89), Fairmuir (89-90), Lincraig (91-92),

U/13 Scottish Cup winner:

Sporting Club (85-86).

U/12 Scottish Cup winners:

Fairmuir (77-78, 81-82), Arbroath LC (83-84), St Columba* (89-90).

Dave continued, “Fairmuir BC, under George Davidson, are, I think, the only club from Dundee Sunday Boys to have won a Scottish Youth FA Cup.

“There is no record of a Glentoroy in the Dundee Juvenile League,

“However, Herbie Armstrong ran Glentoran before he formed twice U/27 winners Lochee Renton.

“Lochrae played at Parkhead in a semi-final, and this has been documented in a previous BwB article.”

So, come on, let’s have the names of other Dundee teams which have won the Scottish Cup.

If you can supply a tale and perhaps a photo, then even better!

ANDREW’S FAMILY ARE MOVED BY DOWNFIELD JUNIORS’ GESTURES

The poignant scattering of Andrew Brown’s ashes on Downfield Park, as highlighted in last week’s BwB, was a very moving occasion.

The family were very moved by the ceremony, and were full of praise for the way Downfield Juniors assisted them in what turned out to be a very special day, indeed.

“My sister Gillian and I would like to say our heartfelt thanks to the Evening Telegraph, yourself and Downfield Junior FC for their tributes to our late father Andrew Brown,” said Lorraine Brown, Andrew’s daughter.

“Last Friday’s Blether with Brown was wonderful and the pictures of our Dad in his Downfield strip from 1958 and granddad with his Lochee Harp strip from 1936 was really moving for us as a family to see.

“Downfield Junior FC were superb to us.

“They made us really welcome and chairman Alex Duncan and his committee couldn’t have done any more to make our day special laying our Dad to rest by scattering his ashes at the ground.

“It was very moving, with our family and players past and present paying respects.

“A couple of things we did not expect were added to the day.

“Old-style club shirts were presented to Dad’s grandchildren Ross and Andrew Batchelor, and there was also a one-minute silence before the game started against Arbroath SC

“This is something that will live in our memory for a long time.

“Alex also kindly accepted the offer of an end-of-season trophy in our Dad’s memory and we have been invited back to present it.”

See photo at foot of column.

DUNCAN ERSKINE remembers, as a youngster, watching Andrew Brown play for Downfield when his dad DAVE ERSKINE was the Spiders president.

“He was a great player, a great half-back,” said Duncan, who eventually went on to play for Downfield and also enjoyed spells with other junior sides Elmwood, Carnoustie and Harp.

“Billy ‘Titch’ Sutherland was in the Downfield photo, too, and he went on to win a Scottish Cup winners’ medal with Rutherglen Glencairn.”

Duncan, along with FRANCIE WEMYSS and IAN WOOD, also pointed out that, in last week’s Downfield 1958 team caption, “Warden and Fenbow” should have read “Fenbow and Warden”.

Ian also asked me to look out for a Downfield team group from 1962, of which he was a part.

Unfortunately, our files drew a blank.

However, if any BwB reader has such a photo, please send it in.

DUNDEE SCHOOLBOYS FOOTBALLERS 1965

While perusing through photo files looking for other pictures, it’s amazing what you come across.

Consequently, I’ve pulled out a few which I reckon could be of interest to BwB readers. I’ll use them over the coming weeks.

This one (below) is of the DUNDEE PRIMARY SCHOOLBOYS team of 1965, with teachers (from left) A. W. Russell, T. D. G. Soutar, W. S. Young and E. McCafferty, and which contains a future Scotland international.

Players are (back row, from left) — Donnett, Wallace, Saunders, Holden, Morgan, Johnstone (Derek, the future international), Piggott, Craig. Front — Petrie, Morris, McCann, Gall, Smith.

Top photo - After the scattering of his ashes, Andrew Brown’s daughters Lorraine Brown (left) and Gillian Batchelor, and grandsons Ross (11, left) and Andrew Batchelor (9) were presented with strips by the Downfield players Ralph Henderson (left) and Mark Ferrie. Also watching the ceremony at the back are past and present players and officials.
