Dundee City Council has been receiving a lot of criticism lately for the state of parks, etc.
However, I believe in also giving praise where it is due.
The city has a lot that is praiseworthy, including a bright, bustling City Centre, a growing cultural quarter in the West End and much more.
Just the other day I went to McManus Galleries to have a look at the Titian masterpiece that has come to the city.
What a prestigious accolade and surely a reflection that McManus, and as a consequence, Dundee, is getting some things right.
The painting is beautiful and vast. I hope many Dundonians take the opportunity to have a look at this fine piece of art and realise that, yes, we have problems, but there are some things that are positive. — Realist.
Independence will not ease job losses
It is heartening to read that youth unemployment in Dundee has fallen by 6%, according to the STUC.
However, recent announcements about job losses in front line NHS services and other public sector organisations are very worrying for many Dundee families.
Businesses, too, are concerned given the knock-on effects.
Chancellor George Osborne’s cuts are very alarming, and I think will be devastating for many families in Dundee and across Scotland.
But the SNP’s proposal to cut to ties with the union will potentially cause even more damage, as the public sector will have to shed even more jobs with fiscal autonomy.
I realise many think the oil revenues will see us through. But we know oil prices are volatile, and then there is the pound-dollar exchange rate.
I’m looking forward to the second stage of Scottish devolution, but independence is a step too far for the majority of people in Scotland. — Lesley McMahon.
Strict security causes problem
One of my credit card providers prompted me to contact my bank as there was a problem in the process of taking this month’s Direct Debit.
When I contacted Bank of Scotland via the 24-hour telephone banking line, I was asked a number of security questions relating to the Direct Debits set up on the account.
Upon explaining that I could not answer the questions accurately since the amounts vary every month and I did not have my statements with me, I was asked to estimate.
Not being able to give a close enough estimate, I was subsequently locked out of my account.
I decided to contact the complaints line and explain that it was useless asking me these sorts of questions since I use telephone banking on the move and don’t carry all my statements everywhere.
I asked to set up a different form of security check to use with telephone banking and they declined to do anything for me, despite me explaining that I would have to move bank if they couldn’t.
As a result of this, I am now in the process of finding another bank to transfer all my current accounts, savings, cash ISAs and investments to.
I don’t know why I couldn’t just set up a password like I do with my credit card. — Disgruntled Customer.
Volunteer appeal
The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) is the main UK charity providing help and support to people with serious sight loss. We rely on voluntary contributions to keep our services running.
We have one desperate shortage — people to support our existing volunteers.
The Volunteer Co-ordinator role involves supporting the team of volunteers in Angus. Ideally you enjoy driving around the country meeting existing volunteers, inducting new volunteers and helping to raise the profile of RNIB.

Drink cost shock
I was making my way to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, and fancied a can of Diet Coke.
Not wishing to raise a second mortgage to buy one at the Ninewells concourse shop, I stopped off at a “supermarket” nearby where my daughter nipped in and got me one, and they ONLY charged 79p.
Well, you know my local Co-op (the most expensive grocer in the country) is currently offering Diet Pepsi 6 packs for £2.75, buy one, get one free. That works out at just under 23p a can.
I am all for enterprise, but let’s not be greedy. A can of cola is actually worth only a few pence. — Eck Settera.
Summer fete
Ballumbie Court Nursing Home is having a summer fete to raise funds for the residents’ comfort fund tomorrow from 2pm to 4pm. There will be many types of activities.
It’s a fun day for all, so please come and join in the fun. — Shona.
