Community centre vital to Whitfield

The Whitfield Community Centre.

Regarding the new road through Whitfield, Dundee, a regeneration project, which will result in more homes.

The plans will mean substantial changes for the area.

My concern is what this means for Whitfield Community Centre. Will it be knocked down?

I have worked and volunteered there for three years. This centre brings hundreds of kids through its doors and, at times, I have in excess of 30 children in some classes I teach.

These classes have produced tremendous results.

If the centre is knocked down, the early years centre will not be able to accommodate my classes.

It’s great that lots of new homes will be built in Whitfield, but what worries me is that me, a local girl, will have to give up teaching local children because of lack of space.

But, more importantly, these kids moving into the area will be placed in a community where there are potentially no adequate facilities for them.

I fear children will not have a safe place to play, gather, or join in group activities.

The community centre used to be the heart of the community, and I feel this will only encourage young people to be out on the streets causing trouble rather than participating in something constructive. — Worker.

Disgust at behaviour
I went to Lochee PO where I pick up my pension and was appalled and disgusted at the behaviour of another customer.

On this day one of the girls was being verbally abused by a customer. The girl was visibly upset and shaking.

Nobody deserves to be treated like that and should feel safe at their place of work. What really angered me was that no manager or supervisor came to that girl’s side to deal with it.

I am a regular there but, being an OAP, it was very disturbing to witness.

I only hope the girl was okay. — Edna Evans.

Authority listening
I respond to the person who sent a letter ‘The taxi drivers are at breaking point’.

I would totally refute the claim the Licensing Committee is not choosing to listen to the drivers.

The writer should be aware that for many years there has been a very active Liaison Forum between the committee and appointed representatives from the taxi trade to discuss many issues that affect their livelihood.

Comments back to me as the convener have suggested the taxi group have felt these meetings are constructive. Full details of these meetings are posted on the Council’s website as well as the business of the Licensing Committee.

I extend an offer to the writer of the letter if he or she has issues they want raised, please make contact with your representative on this group to have them tabled at our next meeting which will be held in September as this is the correct forum to have them discussed. — Bailie Rod Wallace, Convener Licensing Committee, Dundee City Council.

Smokers outside pubs putting off customers
I was shocked and dismayed to find that I had to struggle to get into a pub while out for a drink in Broughty Ferry at the weekend.

Smokers were lined up to three deep hogging the door and stopping people from entering and exiting with ease.

I had to inhale their toxic cancerous fumes and worse still, I had my 12-year-old daughter and her friend with me and they had to inhale it too.

I was led to believe it was illegal to stand within a certain distance of the door.

If the poor publicans, who are always wailing about lack of customers, did something about this they might find they have more people entering their establishments. — Miss Cynthia Munro-Smythe, Monifieth.

Driving standards
I am appalled by the standard of driving in Dundee’s West End.

I reside in a built-up area where there are children and many elderly walking the streets, yet yobs race up and down at speeds that must be approaching 60 mph.

I’m tired of drivers who don’t follow the Highway Code.

They are a danger to themselves and others. — H. White.
