| Daryl Beech (19), who runs organisation Easy Walkers to raise funds for injured and abused animals in Angus, Dundee and Fife, was shocked when the Tele reported that a council employee had been seen to bludgeon a baby gull to death during a cull.
He wrote to the paper to express his anger and said he received more than 30 calls and letters of support.
“I told the Lord Provost we had been quite upset about what had happened with the seagulls,” he said.
“I suggested the council stop using marksmen with guns and instead get people to go out and remove the eggs and nests. That way, there wouldn’t be so many birds growing up in the area.
“I also raised the issue of rubbish in the city centre, with people coming out of takeaways late at night and discarding food and packaging all over the pavements.
“It would also be an idea for the council to go around at night and empty the bins in the city centre, as they do in other Scottish cities.”
Mr Beech said the Lord Provost had agreed to speak to council chief executive David Dorward and to make the point about emptying rubbish bins at nights.
“I am expecting to receive a letter from Mr Dorward in the next couple of weeks,” he said.
“I admit the seagulls are a problem — but we don’t have to go around shooting them.” |
