| Music fans were bracing themselves for rain at this weekend’s giant music festival at Balado, by Kinross.
Yvonne Cook (26), from Kelty, who has been to every single T in the Park, thought this year’s line-up could be the best yet.
Undeterred by the storm warnings, she was hoping to get to the front of the crowd for the Black Eyed Peas, Eminem and Faithless.
She said, “I only live a few miles away from Balado but always get a camping ticket, the atmosphere is too good to miss.
“I’ve got my wellies and waterproofs packed so nothing is going to stop me from having a good time.”
Fans were even arriving without tickets. John-Bevan Price and Adam Hassoun, both 29, travelled from Cardiff hoping to buy some at the last minute.
John said, “T in the Park is famous across the UK for being an amazing event. We hope to get a ticket somehow.”
Adam added, “We had the weekend free so jumped in the car for the eight-hour trip.”
Other top acts this weekend include Eminem, Muse and Kasabian
With 25,000 campers having already arrived, no major delays were experienced on approach roads today.
But police urged motorists to show patience heading for Balado and the inevitable holds-up around the massive site.
There are 70,000 camping , with another 15,000 travelling back and forth from the festival.
The man in charge of policing, Chief Superintendent Craig Suttie, is clear on his priority.
“Safety is our prime concern — it is a very large number of people gathering in one place,” he said today.
“It is also great opportunity for our officers to engage with the public.”
450 police will be on duty at the event which has virtually doubled in size since it was first staged at Balado in 1997.
Perth and Kinross Council staff were also available to deal with queries from nearby residents and festivalgoers, answering questions on environmental health, pollution, waste, noise, roads and Trading Standards.
Council staff could be contacted on a special phone line — 0141 890 1200.
Council leader, Councillor Ian Miller said, “I wish everyone attending T in the Park a fantastic, fun and safe weekend.
“Council staff will be working hard during the festival along with our partner agencies and the event organisers to make sure it is as enjoyable as possible for everyone going to Balado.”
* Camping stores in Dundee were enjoying the silver lining to T in the Park’s clouds.
The forecasts of rain —the sun should finally break out on Sunday — saw revellers dash to stock up on wellies and waterproofs.
Neil Findlay, assistant manager at Blacks, in Commercial Street, said, “There has certainly been a boost in cagoules, tents and wellies.
“The options for getting stuff for T in the Park are a lot larger now.”
Ian Ratcliffe, of Milletts in the Cowgate, joked a rain dance by his staff had helped to boost sales.
The store is selling a range of waterproofs, including Zandra Rhodes-designed macs and guitar-themed wellies.
He said, “We have been selling lots of wellies and cagoules as well as normal camping stuff like tents, sleeping bags and rucksacks.
“T In the Park is always the busiest week of the summer regardless of the weather.”
Other stores, including B & Q at Milton of Craigie retail park, were displaying only limited stocks of wellies today. |
