“We enjoy a blether in the pub on Saturdays about the topics you feature in BwB on Fridays.
“In recent months, you have featured fathers and sons who played together for the same team.
“We were wondering if BwB — through your readers — can confirm that a team called WOODLANE FC, who played in the Dundee Sunday Morning League in the mid-70s, had three pairs of brothers playing for them.
“I’m sure they were Ian and Willie Tully, Bobby and John Milne, and Jimmy and Denis McDonald.
“Perhaps BwB can unearth other teams which had two or more brothers playing together?”
BILL IS ACTUALLY BOB
A reader referred back to a BwB article on Christmas Eve last year, in which PETER DILLON submitted a school basketball team photo.
“It’s in regard to the photo of the Morgan Academy basketball team,” said ‘Bill’.
“I’m listed as ‘Bill, surname unknown, coach’. However, I am actually BOB MACKENZIE, who left Ward Road Jesters basketball team to join Morgan Academy FP on their formation.
“I remember the lads winning the Scottish Junior Cup in Dunfermline. I still retain (somewhere) a copy of the scoresheet.”
“WHAT ABOUT THE FAIRIES?”
The letter — unsigned — was short and to the point.
“What about doing something on the Fairies teams from the 1960s,” was the demand.
“They were very successful.”
Indeed, they were, and I remember watching many of FAIRFIELD’S games in the old Dundee and District Juvenile League.
Delving into the files, there were several photos I could have used.
However, I’ve chosen the photo from 1967 (at foot of column) for the simple fact it contains two former team-mates of mine — Ian Johnstone (Broughty Athletic) and Jim Finlayson (East Fife).
Back row (from left) — I. Johnstone, Hunter, Gorrie, Adam, Selway, Black.
Front row — Yule, Young, R. Johnstone, Glen, Boyd, Finlayson.
However, my buddy Jim Finlayson a sub?
Never! Mr Goals must have been injured!
PERHAPS AN ARBROTH TEAM?
Reader TOM HODGSON sent in the photo (at foot of column) of a 1917-1918 football team called SEAFORTH FC.
"My father played with this team and won some kind of cup," said Tom. “His name was also Tom Hodgson, and he was 17 at the time.
"I would like to know more about this team, which I think played in Arbroath. Through your column, perhaps some of the players' relatives may be able to supply other information about this team."
Back row (from left) — Tom Beattie, Bill Littlejohn, Alex Vannett, Jim Black.
Second back — Jim Easton, Bill Skea, “Gunner” Moir, Gordon Beattie, Alex. Glass, Ned Stirling, Jim Buick.
Third row — Joe Hershell, Jack Kinnear, Jim Cobb, Jim Walton, “Nibbett” Chapman.
Front row — “Nacket” Carrie, Jack Chapman, Tom Hodgston.
DAVY RETURNS TO THE CITY IN LATE JULY
Dundonian DAVY GOLLAN, now in New Zealand, is coming home to Dundee next month — and wants to meet up with some of his former team-mates.
“I will be back in Dundee in late July and early August,” said former Kirkton High School pupil Davy from his current home in Wellington.
“I have noticed that Dundee play Montrose on July 31 at Dens Park.
“I’d love to catch up with Les Barr and any of my old Montrose mates for a beer and a blether and go to the game.
“Most of my mates are all ‘Arabs’ — with the exception of Dundee fanatic Wullie Reilly — and look forward to also hearing from some of them.
“During my spell home, I’ll be staying at my mum and dad’s house. Phone 01382 826461.”
Davy concluded, “We’re all loving the All Whites (New Zealand) games at the World Cup, and the whole country has gone daft over the round ball.
“I never thought I’d see the day when football here got more press than rugby!”
