| Dougie Leitch, of Dundee Private Hire, also known as 203020, picked up the fare of three men, all believed to be in their early to mid 20s, in the city centre’s Union Street at 11.50 last night.
The men asked to be taken to Camperdown Park but, when the taxi was about 100 yards inside the main entrance, Mr Leitch felt something placed against his neck. The men then assaulted him and robbed him of his money before making off on foot.
Detective Sergeant Marc Lorente, of central division CID, said, “Mr Leitch was shocked but did not require medical attention.”
CID officers are now reviewing extensive CCTV footage of the route taken and have appealed for witnesses to come forward. The first man was wearing a white hooded top and was described as having “buck teeth” and ginger-blond curly hair.
The second man was wearing dark clothing and a dark hooded top, and the third man also wore a dark hooded top with the light-coloured number 59 or 69 on the front. He is described as having “thick lips”.
A woman who answered the door at Mr Leitch’s flat in Coldside said he was OK but did not want to say anything about his ordeal.
Anyone with information regarding the robbery, or who saw the three men either in the city centre or in the Camperdown area, should contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222. Information can also be passed on anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
* Dundee Private Hire owner David Young has offered a “substantial” reward for the capture of the knife-wielding robbers.
Mr Young said, “It’s absolutely scandalous in this day and age that this should happen, but it’s the world we live in.
“It’s the first time this has happened to us, though, and I hope the individuals responsible are caught as quickly as possible, not just for our drivers but for all drivers in the city.
“We are offering a substantial reward for anybody who can tell us or the police who was responsible for this and get them captured.” |
