English top-flight outfit to play at Tannadice
Dundee United will wind up their pre-season schedule with a game against English top-flight opposition, which could see a former favourite make a return to Tannadice (writes Graeme Finnan).
Premier League Wigan Athletic will be guests of the Tangerines on Sunday, August 8, and the game is likely to see ex-United striker Jason Scotland line up against his old club.

The Trinidad and Tobago international was a popular figure among Tangerine fans, but was forced to quit the club in 2005 following a work permit row.

Scotland then moved to St Johnstone, who, at that time, were playing in the First Division, before switching to Swansea in 2007.

An impressive spell with the Welsh outfit culminated in last summer’s switch to Wigan, where he teamed up once again with ex-Swansea boss Roberto Martinez.

However, although he’s been gone for five years, Scotland is like to receive a warm welcome from the United fans.

“We’re really looking forward to the visit of Wigan,” said United communications director Derek Robertson.

“Roberto Martinez is a well-respected figure in Scottish football and his squad includes some well-known Scots.

“Of course, there will be added spice in the return to Tannadice of former fans’ favourite Jason Scotland.

“The match takes place just two days after our Europa League play-off draw, so there should be a buzz surrounding this, our only home pre-season game.”

There are other SPL connections within the Wigan pool, with ex-Celtic defender Gary Caldwell and former Hamilton midfielder James McCarthy now plying their trade at the DW Stadium.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez is, himself, no stranger to Scottish football, having played for Motherwell.

And he is eagerly looking forward to bringing his men to Tayside.

He said, “This will be ideal preparation for both clubs just in time for the beginning of the new season.

“I know from my time playing in Scotland just how passionate the Dundee United supporters are and how intense the atmosphere they create at Tannadice Park is.

“Together with the fact they have an extremely competitive side, who are on the back of a very successful season, means this will be an exciting and demanding contest.”

Meanwhile, although United have still to find out who their opponents will be, plans are already being formalised for the club’s return to European football in August.

The Tangerines will learn who their Europa Cup opponents will be when the draw is made on August 6.

However, the club have announced they intend to charter a plane for the away leg, which will take place on either August 19 or 26.

And, subject to demand, United hope to make sufficient seats available for supporters who wish to travel with the official party.

With that in mind, the club would be keen to hear from fans who might be considering making the journey with the team.

Meanwhile, chairman Stephen Thompson has says a realistic offer for striker David Goodwillie would be around the £3 million mark.

The Tele revealed yesterday that Rangers were poised to bid £750,000 for the Scotland U-21 man.

However, Thompson insists that sort of offer wouldn’t be entertained.

He said, “I would not be interested in the £750,000 figure and anyone coming in at that figure would just be wasting their time.

“I would consider a realistic offer for David Goodwillie to be £3 million.

“But I wish to reassure our fans that nobody is actively up for sale, although if a realistic offer were to come in for any of our players it would be considered.”
