Griffiths won’t go on cheap
Dundee are in the dark over any interest from Hearts in star striker Leigh Griffiths, but they are in the know about one thing — £150,000 would be nowhere near enough to get him (writes Tom Duthie).
There was little comment today from Dens concerning a weekend report Tynecastle boss Jim Jefferies sees the Scotland Under-21 man as the perfect partner for his other major close-season signing Kevin Kyle.

Dundee did, however, confirm there has been no contact from the capital about their prize asset.

It’s understood Jefferies could make a move in the next week or so and, if he does, could come up with a low six-figure bid.

With it only likely to be slightly more than the Dark Blues paid Livingston for the 19-year-old a year ago, the offer will get an instant knock back.

Griffiths scored 19 goals last season and picked up a second SFL Young Player of the Year award in a row, leaving several clubs monitoring his situation.

While it’s not 100% certain the player will still be at Dens at the end of the summer, he will only be sold if an exceptional offer comes in.

And the bulk of any money earned would be handed to boss Gordon Chisholm to further strengthen his squad.

In Hearts’ case, even if the money was right, the fact he was a Hibs fan as a boy would be an added problem.

Just before he joined Dundee, Griffiths was linked with a move to Tynecastle, but immediately made it clear his Easter Road leanings meant he did not see that as an option.

Meanwhile, midfielder Richie Hart has completed his six-month loan move to Swedes Ostersunds. Hart, who was told he was surplus to requirements at Dens, should have the option of making his switch to the continent permanent if things work out.

Dixon’s Hampden heartache lingers
Paul Dixon has handed Dundee United a fitness boost with the news he expects to be fit to join in with the rest of the squad from day one of pre-season training (writes Tom Duthie).
The full-back, though, has admitted that while his broken foot has almost mended, the pain of missing the Scottish Cup Final hasn’t gone away.

Dixon’s season came to a premature end on April 11 when he snapped a metatarsal in the opening minutes of the semi-final win over Raith Rovers.

Despite using a hyperbaric chamber in a bid to speed his recovery, an X-ray the week of the final showed the bone was still broken and it was only over the weekend he was able to resume running.

That at least means he will be doing ball work when he reports back to Tannadice on July 2.

“I’ve been out for a run and, although my foot ached a bit, the doctors told me to expect that and it’s now just a case of making sure I don’t push too hard too early,” he said.

“My foot feels fine and, if I had to, I’m sure I could be kicking a ball already, but this far away from the start of the season there’s no point taking any risks.

“I’m going to be working every day to build my fitness again because I had six weeks doing nothing and I will definitely be with the rest of the boys when our pre-season starts.”

He aims to be in his usual place when the 2010/11 campaign kicks off and is focusing on United’s entry in the Europa Cup in mid-August to help put the disappointment of missing out on the final behind him.

“That’s still a sore one for me. At the game itself I was okay — and it was brilliant being on the pitch at the end with the rest of the boys.

“It was only when we all got back in the dressing-room and I sat down and thought about it that it hit me just what I’d missed.

“It’s a feeling of disappointment that I don’t think will ever go away.

“I’ve been told as well that the SFA won’t be giving out any extra medals and only the boys who played against Ross County have them.

“I think it would’ve been nice if they’d handed out a few extra so boys like me, Darren Dods and Damian Casalinuovo who helped get us to Hampden could have got one as well, but I’m not going to bother about it.

“I intend to be positive and I’m really looking forward to Europe and trying to build on what we achieved last season.”

Word from United is that Dods is also on course to be ready for pre-season following his knee surgery and steps have been taken to get Mihael Kovacevic back on the road to recovery as soon as possible.

Kovacevic tore a cruciate ligament while training with his father back home in Switzerland last week and will now fly back to Scotland to prepare to have the damage repaired by surgery.

“Mihael is coming over next week to do some strengthening work with the physio and then he’ll have the operation here on the 21st of the month,” explained gaffer Peter Houston.

“We’ve got the same surgeon who operated on Jon Daly, so, hopefully, we can get Mihael back in the same kind of time — but it is going to be months before we see him again.”

Kovacevic is out of contract in January and talks over his future will not be affected by his holiday mishap.

“You are talking about a cup winner who has done a very good job for us and what’s important right now is getting him fit again so he can be part of the squad,” added Houstie.

Meanwhile, it’s been confirmed United will play Hull City at the KC Stadium on Saturday, July 31.
