I read with interest about the mess left at the Ice Arena in Dundee and the subsequent outcry.
Tenants at the city’s Elders Court put up with rubbish dumped any place, dirty nappies thrown out of windows, syringes, drug paraphernalia, even human waste in lifts.
That’s not to mention drug dealing, anti-social behaviour, and much more.
Even though it is reported to housing, Tayside Police and the anti-social team, it falls on deaf ears and nothing seems to change.
There is a tenants group, but it seems unable to do anything about these ongoing problems. I sometimes feel like I am living in a slum.
The situation is getting worse. We have fires all the time. There were three last weekend. The sooner they demolish the multis the better. — Hard-Working Rent and Council Tax Payer.
Tougher measures needed
Letter writer SJB is correct to say people do not have a right to make a huge mess wherever they stop and then leave the rest of us to clear up in their wake.
However, the mess looks not unlike that left by revellers in the T in the Park campsite and, to a lesser extent, at other parts of the Balado site, not to mention at other major entertainment events like Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations.
Yet the reaction of the powers that be is merely to praise the “behaviour and attitude” or “exemplary behaviour” of revellers, on the basis that the vast majority don’t indulge in serious crime.
Of course, the same can be seen on a lesser scale everywhere, with the army of council cleaners required to “clean up in the wake” of many ordinary people in Dundee testament to this.
As for the fines for dropping cigarette ends mentioned by the letter writer, I believe this is mere tokenism and gesture politics.
Thus until the attitude of the powers-that-be changes, the behaviour of both travellers and an increasing number of non-travellers regarding rubbish seems set to worsen. — Stuart Winton, Dundee.
Why shouldn’t kids get decent park?
Sandy Park
I write in response to the letter suggesting the £95,000 cost of replacing the Sandy Park in Balgillo Park should be spent elsewhere in the city.
Why should it be? The children of this area have the same rights as any kids from elsewhere to have a safe park to play in, which actually has equipment they can enjoy.
The landowners are meeting part of the cost as the plans for the area had to include a park.
The community is going to be getting involved in the fund-raising activities, too.
We are not going to just sit around and wait for this to happen. We are going to work together to achieve it.
Yes, Balgillo Park is a nice area, but that does not mean it is not without its problems.
It has dirty sand, and only two toddler swings and a ramshackle chute to play on.
That’s why we need a new park. — Forthill Parent.
Shevvy getting back to fitness
I write to follow up my letter which was published in the Tele last month regarding the horrific accident suffered by my precious dog Shevvy, who broke his leg falling down a large pothole in Dundee.
Firstly I thank all friends, family and neighbours who have popped in to see Shevvy and spoiled him with treats. It certainly lifted his spirits.
The biggest thank you goes to the vet, Jason Skelly, who has popped round and given Shevvy the best care and attention possible. Shevvy and I appreciate what everyone has done for us.
Shevvy is recovering well and he has started gentle walking outside again.
The change in his mood has been evident, to be honest I think he was getting bored of sitting in watching daytime television.
According to the vet he should be back to normal in about a month, not long before he will be chasing cats again. — Doug Walker.
Ryan waxes for victory
My son Ryan Knight is Scottish under 20 Javelin Champion from Dundee.
Ryan had a leg wax on Sunday to raise funds for ‘warm weather training’ in Portugal with the Scotland Athletics team. He raised around £450.
Ryan undertook this procedure at Beauty & Nail at Tropical Tan, Happyhillock. — Proud Mum.
Promote McManus all over
Now that the McManus Galleries in Dundee is open again, a photo of it should be put on the front of the Tourist Information brochures, as the building is probably the only one of its like in the country and we should be promoting it all over the country. — Reader.
