Chamber to quiz election hopefuls
Business people in Dundee and Angus will have the chance to find out what their politicians will do for them if elected at the forthcoming General Election (writes Bruce Robbins).
They’ll be quizzing prospective parliamentary candidates for the Westminster poll at a breakfast seminar at Dundee & Angus Chamber of Commerce tomorrow.

The chamber’s chief executive, Alan Mitchell, said, “Whoever forms the Government after the next election faces huge challenges on the economy and public finances, and they will have to make some tough decisions.

“Our members will be making it clear to these local candidates that business should not be seen as a soft target for these tough decisions.”

Mr Mitchell said the aspiring MPs will be left in no doubt that much is expected of whoever is elected to Parliament.

He added, “Firms in Dundee and Angus expect their local MPs to be fighting their corner and securing funding and tax breaks for the region’s key sectors, like higher education, games/digital media and tourism, and making sure Dundee and Angus get the same levels of infrastructure investment as the rest of the country.

“Companies don’t vote — but the people who run them and work in them do.”

The Waking Up Westminster Breakfast Hustings, organised by the chamber, the Institute of Directors and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, will take place at the chamber’s City Quay office.

The four parliamentary candidates who will be participating are: Alberto Costa, Conservative, Angus; Jim McGovern MP, Labour, Dundee West; Stewart Hosie MP, SNP, Dundee East; and John Barnett, Liberal Democrats, Dundee West.
