“Lazy residents” causing fire risk

Rubbish left by a close — a potential fire hazard.

Dundee councillor Ian Borthwick has slammed “lazy residents” who pile furniture and rubbish up in tenement closes, putting the lives of other tenants at risk (writes Bruce Robbins).
He said the stack of unwanted household goods is a fire hazard and a blight on the lives on people who have to put up with waste left by “irresponsible” residents.

Mr Borthwick has reported the latest episode of dumping to the council’s housing division after being alerted to potentially inflammable material left beside a tenement in St Clement’s Place.

“This is clearly an issue, not just in St Mary’s but right across Dundee,” he said. “It has the potential to endanger lives, both as a fire risk and a possible impediment during emergency situations.

“It’s a minority of lazy residents who act in this irresponsible way, but they create danger and unpleasantness for decent people who want to live properly and bring their families up in a safe environment.”
