| The female driver of the single-decker 1C bus noticed smoke coming from the left rear nearside wheel and evacuated the commuters just before the vehicle went up in flames.
Carol Watson, who lives in nearby Fleming Gardens West, was waiting for a bus on the other side of the road when she saw the hurried evacuation.
She said, “The bus was due to leave at 8.20 for St Mary’s. All the passengers got off safely and the next thing you knew, the bus had gone on fire. You could see the fire underneath it.”
“The driver was ok, but badly shaken. The passengers were calm and caught another bus down the road.”
Fire crews were at the scene within minutes to extinguish the blaze, which blew out the rear windows of the vehicle.
Crew manager Fraser Johnston said, “On arrival there were flames in the engine bay and the area around the rear wheels. There was also a lot of smoke.
“We contained any spillages from the bus and extinguished the fire. The windows at the rear were broken by the time we got here due to the heat.”
A spokeswoman for National Express Dundee said an investigation would be launched into the cause of the fire. |
