Make mine a double!

Paul Slater

A Dundee man has been putting in the final hours of training as he gears up for tomorrow’s double marathon between Glasgow and Edinburgh (writes Katie Smyth).
Fitness fanatic Paul Slater (30) is a support worker at the Cornerstone service in Dundee and has decided to test himself to the limit for a cause close to his heart.

“I do a lot of running and I’ve been a part of the Dundee Road Runners club for two years,” he explained.

“Because I work in care, I thought it would be a good idea to raise money and challenge myself.

“I did the Edinburgh marathon last year and the Dundee marathon the year before.

“I also run a lot of half marathons but I’ve never done anything like this before.”

Paul will start tomorrow’s epic 56-mile run at Ruchill in Glasgow, following a predominantly rural and off-road route to Edinburgh Quay. He said, “I am really excited about running the double marathon.

“It’s fantastic to be able to combine my fitness challenge with raising money for the service.

“My colleagues and the people I help have been very supportive, although they do keep trying to lead me astray by offering me sweets.”

Cornerstone is a Scottish charity that provides care and support services for adults, children and young people with disabilities and other special needs.

Paul was employed by them a few years ago before moving to Dundee City Council’s social work department, but he has now moved back to work in one of Cornerstone’s Dundee care homes that provides round-the-clock care.

“Every aspect of their life, I’m there to support,” Paul said.

Paul has set up a JustGiving Internet page to raises funds for his run, and has so far amassed £1400, which he hopes to put towards garden decking for the Cornerstone house.
