End of offender project marked

Community service supervisor Jim Flynn (left) and Cllr Barrie oversee some of the work.

A team of offenders who have redecorated Dundee’s Grey Lodge Settlement celebrated the completion of their project today (writes Laura Thomas).
The group have worked tirelessly over the past eight weeks transforming the interior of the South George Street building as part of their Community Service Orders.

The scheme was identified by Grey Lodge as an opportunity for offenders to carry out maintenance work and develop their painting and decorating skills as part of their payback to the local community.

Social work and health convener Councillor Jim Barrie said, “The payback project is an excellent example of community service. Community service is an effective order with reconviction rates considerable better than those for short prison sentences. About 400 community service orders are supervised annually in Dundee and the work undertaken by offenders has an estimated value of £300,000 to the local community.”

Grey Lodge director Alan Duncan also commented on their “great job” adding, “They have made a huge difference to the fabric of the building.”
