Dads urged to find quality time
A Scottish Government campaign is urging Dundee dads to invest in quality time with their children (writes Laura Thomas).
A study, conducted by the national Play, Talk Read scheme, found infants involved in play at a young age will perform better at school, develop improved social skills and grow into healthier adults.

Despite the findings, it is understood 58% of Scottish dads worry they don’t spend enough time playing, talking or reading to their tot.

Dundee-based Ged Reilly (35) is married with three children. He said, “I had a great childhood playing outdoors with my family, especially lots of football with my dad.

“I want my kids to have the same fun and experiences, and that’s why we get out and about as much as possible as a family. It is tricky when you work long hours to get the right balance, but, if I don’t make it home for the wee one’s bedtime reading, then I make sure at the weekend we spend time reading and playing.

“It’s the simple things that can have a huge impact on her develop- ment and really want to give her the best start.”

Minister for Children and Early Years Adam Ingram said today’s busy lifestyles can leave parents feeling “overstretched” and “exhausted” with fathers feeling guilty about not spending time with children.

“It’s important for dads to have the confidence to play and have fun with their children without worrying about how often they do it and whether they’re doing it right — it’s quality time and attention that makes all the difference; simply playing, talking and reading with their little ones and having fun from day one.”

Play, Talk, Read offers many play suggestions and gives parents the chance to win baby goodies that will help put in place the building blocks for future life.
