Garry has got what it takes
Dundee United defender Garry Kenneth has received an international vote of confidence from a man who knows what it takes — Paul Hegarty (writes Graeme Finnan).
‘Heggie’, capped eight times for his country, feels sure the young Dundonian can cope if he’s pitched in for a Scotland debut against the Czech Republic at Hampden on Wednesday evening.

Kenneth was in dominant form for his club as they picked up another three points against Falkirk at the weekend.

And Paul, filling in for manager Peter Houston, who is assisting national boss Craig Levein this week, is convinced the 22-year-old has what it takes to step up to the international stage.

“I’ve known about Garry for a long time, but I’ve only been an ‘insider’ for about a month or so and he’s been excellent.

“He, obviously, had a spell out on loan at Cowdenbeath when Craig (Levein) was here, and I think that has helped him.

“He seems to have matured not only as a player but also as a person and it’s great to see him, along with Paul Dixon and Andy Webster, get international recognition.”

Paul took time to praise the whole team for their comprehensive win over the Bairns.

“We were delighted with the win, especially with the reaction we got after losing to Celtic.

“We were hoping to bounce back, and we did. I thought we were exceptional in the first half against a side who are fighting for their lives and who had a great result the previous week against Aberdeen.

“Everyone worked hard and I thought the goalie and the back four were solid, which gave us the base to build on.”

Paul also credited Morgaro Gomis, who was on target twice in the 3-0 win.

It was the first time the French-born midfielder had scored in front of the Tannadice fans.

“Myself, Dave Bowman, Morgaro and Prince Buaben were talking only last week about midfielders scoring goals, so I was delighted to see Morgaro get a couple.

“Hopefully, he can take confidence from that and get a few more between now and the end of the season.”

Webster, who missed the game against the Bairns due to a calf injury, shrugged off his calf injury to train today.

Dee need a game
Dundee boss Jocky Scott was again left scratching his head at the weekend as another fixture bit the dust (writes Graeme Finnan).
With conditions in Dundee dry overnight, Jocky made an early-morning trip over the Tay, hoping the game against Raith Rovers would get the thumbs up.

However, as he ventured deeper into the Kingdom it became clear the region hadn’t been let off so lightly and, by the time he arrived at Stark’s Park, it was obvious the game had little chance of going ahead.

“There was about an inch of slushy snow covering the park and, when you take into account the pitch was already sodden, the game had no chance,” said Jocky.

“It’s a nightmare for us, as it is for every team in this league.

“Our squad is getting fitter, but some players desperately need games under their belts.

“We’ve arranged to play a friendly against St Johnstone tomorrow and, fingers crossed, that will go ahead.

“But, once again, that will depend on the overnight conditions.

“It was cold last night and the pitches are all hard again today, so it has given us a problem finding decent training facilities.”

If tomorrow’s game against Saints does get the green light, the Dark Blues will give run-outs to the likes of Tony Bullock, Craig McKeown, Derek Young, Colin Cameron, Richie Hart and Pat Clarke.

However, there will be no place in the line-up for versatile defender David Cowan, who continues to recover from a groin problem.

Meanwhile, although Dundee had an idle weekend, their position at the top of the table wasn’t weakened as second-placed Ross County went down 2-1 at Partick.

There was also the added bonus of Inverness Caley Thistle being surprisingly held to a draw at home to lowly Ayr United.

Terry Butcher’s Highlanders visit Dens on Saturday nine points adrift of the Dark Blues. Absent from the squad today were Leigh Griffiths and Andrew Shinnie. The pair are away on Scotland U/21 duty.

Dundee’s game at Raith has been rearranged for Wednesday, April 24.

Moon should be fit
Kevin Moon is suffering from a dead leg, but the St Johnstone midfielder should be fit to face Motherwell at home on Saturday (writes James Masson).
Graham Gartland, a late call-off from the Hibs game due to sickness, trained today and will be fine.

Kenny Deuchar was a surprise inclusion at the weekend. It was thought an ankle knock would keep him out, but he was passed fit and, although he didn't train today, he should make the Motherwell game.
