| Tayside Police were called to assist bridge staff around 8.10am as they removed the BMW, which was blocking one side of the bridge, to the car park on the south side of the river.
The southbound gates were closed to allow the authority to clear the car and were reopened around 9am, causing significant hold-ups.
Bridge authorities requested a gritter to the carriageway as they said ice may have been a contributory factor in the accident.
No one was injured in the incident, but Fife-bound rush-hour traffic trying to cross the bridge was backed up beyond Tesco on Riverside Drive and as far as Broughty Ferry to the east.
One Newport resident who witnessed the chaos said, “I wasn’t stuck myself because I was coming this way into town, but it looked very bad.
“It was backed up from the bottom of Strips of Craigie Road. It seemed blocked up the whole way.”
A motorist from Tayport added, “Everybody was doing the rabbit warren thing with people cutting across Strips of Craigie and Greendykes roads to avoid the traffic.” |
