Newport roadworks disruption under way

Roadworks under way in Newport today.

Six weeks of disruption for motorists in Newport began today (writes Cheryl Wood).
A major road resurfacing project has been launched in the north Fife town, and the first of a series of road closures has come into force.

The junction of High Street, Tay Street and Cupar Road is due to be shut for five days, timed to coincide with the school in-service day and holiday.

Diversions are in place via the A92 trunk road and B946, adjacent to the River Tay, to access either side of the closure.

A number of drivers who were unaware of the works were caught out this morning, and Fife Council’s Transportation Service said it was erecting more information signs within the town as well as those outwith.

Work is expected to continue in Newport until March 28. Other closures planned are Blyth Street, from next Monday (February 15) for seven days, Kilburn (north of Scott Street) from February 22 to 28, Cupar Road (from Blyth Street round to Kilburn), from March 1 to 14, and Tay Street (from the Tay Bridge car park to the Newport 30 mph signs), from March 20 to 21 and 27 and 28.

During the Blyth Street closure parking will be restricted, but access will be possible around Cupar Road, Scott Street and Kilnburn.

Parking will also be restricted during the Kilnburn closure, when access will be possible around Scott Street, Cupar Road and Blyth Street.

Restrictions will also be in place from March 15 to 21 on the High Street, but works will be phased to allow traffic through.

The same diversions as currently in place will be used for the Tay Street closure.

During the current closure and that of Tay Street, bus services are being disrupted and a shuttle bus is in operation.
