| Officers sought to reassure local residents while investigating the robbery itself.
Police are hunting a woman described as 5ft 7 and thin. She was wearing a dark, hooded coat or jacket, light blue jeans and black shoes.
Community Crime Officer PC Pat Nolan said “word had got around” about the mugging. He said, “We have been approached by a few elderly people this morning as some of them know the lady who was robbed.
“We are carrying out high visibility patrols, both uniformed and plain clothes, for the foreseeable future, and we also will be visiting the post office and the nearby chemist.”
PC Nolan appealed to anyone with information to approach himself or a colleague, or call the police directly.
He said, “In the meantime, we would ask people to be vigilant and, if they have any concerns over their safety, to give us a call.”
Police have also been carrying out door-to-door inquiries and reviewing private and public CCTV to identify the assailant. A mother and her six-year-old son on the way to school witnessed the incident.
Anyone who thinks they may know who is responsible should get in touch with police on 0300 111 2222 or speak to any officer.
Information can also be passed on to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 1111. |
