Dee stay focused
The pressure of chasing league points may be off for one week, but Dundee boss Jocky Scott won’t allow his team to take their foot off the gas as they look to claim a Scottish Cup quarter-final place (writes Graeme Finnan).
Standing in their way are Ayr United, who make the trip to Dens on Saturday and, although the Honest Men haven’t seen much action of late, Jocky expects them to be well prepared.

Brian Reid’s side have only played two games — a 1-0 Scottish Cup win at home to Brechin and a 1-0 league defeat at Ross County — since they visited Dens almost two months ago.

That day, the Dark Blues ran out 3-1 winners, but Jocky knows past victories are no guarantee of future success.

He said, “We possibly could be a bit more relaxed, but it’s a cup-tie and it’s more to do with getting into the next round than how we do performance-wise.

“We’ve been playing regularly and that might help.

“But I’m sure Ayr have still been training hard and have managed to get in some bounce games.”

Meanwhile, Jocky admitted, while the benefit of undersoil heating has allowed his men to get fixtures played, the downside has been seeing the pitch begin to look a little worse for wear.

He went on, “We’ve had the heating on a lot and that guarantees us games, which is a good thing, but there is no doubt the pitch is poorer for it.

“I’m not making excuses, but we try to play a passing game and it certainly doesn’t help.

“But I’ve seen games on TV and some of the pitches have looked terrible. It’s probably been worse this season because it has stayed cold for so long, which has seen heating systems having to stay on for a longer period.”

On the playing front, Richie Hart has recovered from the dead leg which saw him go off against Ross County, while Eddie Malone, who has a similar complaint, is expected to return to training tomorrow.

Defender Gary MacKenzie comes back into the plans having served a ban.

Peter keeps an eye on Saints
Dundee United boss Peter Houston will be an interested spectator at Hampden tonight as St Johnstone take on Rangers for a place in the final of the Co-op Cup (writes Graeme Finnan).
The Tangerines meet Saints on Saturday in the Scottish Cup and, regardless of what happens this evening, Peter expects it to be a thrilling tie.

The three games between the pair this season have produced 14 goals and, so far, it’s honours even with one win apiece and a draw.

“It should be another cracker this weekend,” said Peter.

“They put us out of the League Cup, we beat them in the league and we drew the game here.

“We had them watched last Saturday and the report we got was they thoroughly deserved their win over Hearts.

“They also made five changes in the team we drew with the previous Wednesday, so that shows they have options.”

Tickets for United’s back-to-back away games against St Mirren (Feb. 13) and Celtic (Feb. 20) go on sale from the club shop tomorrow.

McInnes urges men to take final step
St Johnstone are no strangers to national cup semi-finals and, having lost more than they have won, hope to improve that record when they face Rangers tonight at Hampden in the Co-operative Insurance Cup (writes James Masson).
“I think only Rangers and Celtic have been in more national cup semis than us recently, but we want to go one step further and reach the final,” said Saints boss Derek McInnes as he completed preparations for tonight’s tie.

The Perth men will be backed by a good support tonight, and Derek added, “We’d love to deliver for our supporters. They give us good backing.”

Saints have done OK since winning their way back into the SPL by clinching the First Division title last season. Derek emphasises the team has come a long way in a short time and a win tonight will be a major step forward.

“To get to this stage, we’ve put out four teams, Stenhousemuir and Arbroath from leagues below us, but also two SPL teams, Hibs at Easter Road and Dundee United at Perth, so we’ve worked hard to get where we are.”

And Saints know hard work will be one of the main ingredients needed this evening.

“Beating Rangers is a big ask,” went on Derek.

And, having been a part of successful Rangers teams as a player, he knows exactly what the Ibrox team and their fans expect.

“Rangers have more experience of these big occasions and a number of match-winners in their side. However, we can cause them problems.

“To do so, we must start the game properly and go and compete. I just hope we can take that extra step tonight and send our fans home happy in the knowledge they’ll be returning for the final.”

Saints still have slight injury concerns over Chris Millar, Jody Morris and Kenny Deuchar, but it’s likely all three will be available.

It’s possible Hampden could have something of an eerie atmosphere tonight. It’s thought the stadium may be only half full.
