Don’t take away chance to keep fit

The Lynch Centre

I was extremely upset to read that there is a possibility the Lynch Centre in Dundee is to remain closed during the day time.

As a backshift worker, I use the gym and badminton facilities in the daytime regularly, and have done for several years.

With obesity levels at an all-time high, I find it unacceptable that the council want to remove residents’ basic sports facilities during the day and provide these services only on a part-time basis.

Surely there has to be a better way in cutting costs without removing fitness and sports hall facilites at this end of town. — Gowrie Park Resident.

Bizarre decision
I hope the ongoing review into the situation at the Lynch Centre does not result in the opening hours of this popular facility being reduced.

I work shifts, and if I am not working during the day, I go to the gym at the Lynch Centre.

There are many others like me and to close the centre during the day would mean that we would have one less option to keep fit.

At a time when we are constantly being told healthy living is important, it seems a bizarre decision. — Fitness Fan.

Our culture is at fault
Regarding the letter “Call for ban on cigarette v ending”, the writer states: “Can you imagine a situation where alcohol, fireworks, knives or other age-restricted products were sold widely in vending machines?”

The answer to this question is yes. I see products such as these, and more, being sold in vending machines up and down Japan, where I now live.

There is almost literally a vending machine on every corner. These vending machines sell all kinds of stuff, from four litre barrels of beer to sacks of rice, cigarettes, the list is quite diverse.

Yet there isn’t a gang of drunken children staggering about the machine.

The machines haven’t been vandalised and the money hasn’t been stolen, all this in a country of 120 million people.

The problem isn’t the availability of goods, it’s the culture of the people.

For some reason we can’t control ourselves in social situations, we have to do everything to excess.

If a country as densely packed as Japan can control themselves and not get blind drunk at every opportunity, from setting fireworks through people’s letterboxes to mugging people who answer their door, why can’t Scotland, which has a measly 5% of Japan’s population? — Ex-Dundonian.

Missing cat
Our grey cat is missing from Broughty Ferry. He has dark whiskers and is very friendly.

He is microchipped. If you see him, please call 01382 528280. — Claire, Broughty Ferry.

Old argument
The calls for modernisation of Dundee Railway Station is all well and good, but the reality is this argument has been going on for a long time and no improvements have happened.

The Liberal Democrats are speaking out on the issue in light of the increasing possibility of a V&A outpost coming to Dundee.

They see we need a modern, attractive station to welcome visitors to the city and they are correct, but when the party was part of a power-sharing government in Scotland it had the opportunity to do something about it, but did not.

Let’s hope the Lib Dems are more successful in opposition. — Realist.

Where were they?
It’s laughable to see the Lib Dems line up for a photo at Dundee Rail Station.

Where were the Lib Dems when they held power at Holyrood for almost 10 years?

What did they do for Dundee Station during that decade?

The SNP have done more for Dundee in two years than any Scottish administration has done — that’s why I shall be voting for them. — Jeff Duncan, Dundee.

Appeal for charity shop help
The Cancer Research Charity Shop in Lochee is looking for volunteers to donate a few hours a week to help in our efforts to raise funds.

If you are interested, call into the shop and speak to Heather or contact us on 01382 612402.

Even a few hours can make all the difference. — Shona Duncan, Dundee.

Money found
I was at the cash machine in Tesco, Kingsway West, Dundee, and found that another user of the machine had left some cash in it.

I handed the money in to Customer Services. — Irene Duffy, Muirfield Crescent, Dundee.

Longest road
I have been enjoying the discussions as to which is the longest road in Dundee. According to the book — “Dundee — A Nostalgic Voyage Through Time” by E. R. Vettraino, the longest road is Arbroath Road (4.95 miles). — Oldtimer.
