Cold snap causing many injuries
Staff at Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital continue to be inundated with patients requiring treatment for falls caused by icy underfoot conditions (writes Geraldine McKelvie).
A spokesperson said today that pedestrians of all ages have been affected by the treacherous weather, and that doctors and nurses have treated some serious injuries.

Staff first noticed the surge in the number of admissions last week as temperatures began to plummet ahead of the festive period.

And the spokesperson admitted staff are still dealing with a huge number of cases as the sub-zero temperatures continued today.

She added, “The situation remains the same regarding A&E admissions, with there being a high number of weather-related injuries during this cold snap.

“The orthopaedic and A&E teams have been particularly busy with some quite serious fractures affecting all ages.

“If you do need to go out, we advise caution and taking your time, especially when walking on icy paths.”

A Tayside Police spokesperson added that adequate clothing and sturdy footwear should be worn at all times by those who have to go out in the icy conditions.
