Ice the main hazard for Tayside motorists
Drivers were advised to watch out for icy roads across Tayside today as forecasters warned the cold weather is set to keep the region in its grip into the New Year (write Grant Smith, Richard Burdge and Philip Murray).
However, police said there were no particular problems on the roads and the Met Office said no heavy snowfalls were expected tonight or tomorrow.

The weekend saw traffic chaos in Perthshire, with up to 10 inches of snow in some places. The A9 was closed at Cairnie Braes for several hours yesterday and there were also closures on the M90 between Kinross and Perth. A 22-year-old Dundee woman was slightly injured when her car skidded off the A90 near Errol.

Tayside Police said they had no reports today of any adverse road conditions in the region, although Transport Scotland warned drivers across Tayside and Fife to watch out for icy patches.

Roads in Dundee were fairly quiet, with many people still off work for the holidays.

Despite no fresh snow overnight in Perth road travel remained a daunting prospect for motorists. With freezing temperatures during the night, snow remained piled up at the side of roads though police said they had no reports of roads closed and said they were passable with care. Outwith Perth, many minor roads remained severely hit by the snow.

In Angus, the mercury plummeted once again overnight, and temperatures in the heart of Forfar were still only -10C by 8.30 this morning. It was even colder in the county’s rural areas.

Despite the deep, penetrating cold, there has so far been no repeat of the chaos that has hit Angus roads in recent days. But ice was a very real risk for those who did brave the weather, especially on rural routes.

The Met Office forecast for today was for temperatures to stay below freezing, but for only the occasional wintry shower near the coast. Some patches of freezing fog were also possible later tonight. Tomorrow will be rather cloudy across Fife and Tayside with a few sleet and snow showers — and cold everywhere.
