Three in roof collapse drama
Three people had a lucky escape at a Dundee city centre store today, when the roof collapsed at the premises (writes Marjory Inglis).
Shop assistant Laura Kyles (28) was taken to Ninewells Hospital following the incident, at the Dog Food Shop, Dock Street.

She is not believed to be seriously injured, and was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

Proprietor Susan Butchart said she was in the store, along with husband and business partner Ian, and Ms Kyles, when the mid-morning incident happened.

“There were workmen on our roof doing repairs, and our roof collapsed into the shop. One member of staff was taken to hospital, just as a precautionary measure,” said Mrs Butchart, who was in tears in the immediate aftermath of the collapse.

“The shop is closed for the foreseeable future, because we have no roof.”

She confirmed none of the animals had been hurt during the roof collapse. Their immediate future will be determined following a visit by health and safety officials and the local authority licensing department.

“We will be following their guidance,” said Mrs Butchart. “All of the animals are fine.”

She said there was no danger to the general public, and the collapse had not affected the buildings and roadway near the shop.

“The public cannot gain access to the premises,” said Mrs Butchart. “We are closed, and the collapse happened at the back end of the shop. There is nothing at the back of the shop.”

Mr and Mrs Butchart have been at the Dock Street shop for 23 months.
