Mugger puts OAP in hospital
Police in Dundee are hunting a “cowardly” mugger who left an 81-year-old woman with a fractured hip and shoulder — the second assault on a defenceless pensioner in the city this week (writes Graeme Ogston).
The elderly lady, who is recovering in Ninewells Hospital, was grabbed from behind at about 4.15 pm yesterday at the corner of Craigie Street and Albert Street.

The robber then ran off towards Albert Street with the pensioner’s handbag, which contained a three-figure sum of cash, leaving her lying badly hurt on the pavement. The man is described as being between 20 and 30, around 5ft 7in and was dressed in dark clothing.

Detective Sergeant Wayne Morrison of Tayside Police condemned the “appalling” assault.

He said, “This is a cowardly attack on an elderly victim, who, as a consequence, has ended up in hospital. It may be up to a week before she is released.”

DS Morrison appealed to the public to help catch the attacker before he struck again.

He said, “There are numerous people going about Albert Street at that time of night and who might recognise the man’s description and who may have also seen the victim.

“She was wearing a cream three-quarter length coat, grey checked trousers and used a walking stick.”

The attack comes only two days after an 80-year-old man was subjected to an unprovoked assault at the front door of his semi-detached bungalow in West School Road.

The pensioner received six stitches for a cut to his hand after struggling with the assailant, who had called at his house.

Police conducted door-to-door inquiries and scenes-of-crime officers carried out a detailed examination in an attempt to trace the assailant, who is described as stocky and in his mid-30s.

The two incidents are not believed to be related.

Anyone who has information on either assault is asked to contact Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222 or speak to any police officer.
