Levein urges team to stay in touch
Dundee United gaffer Craig Levein has urged his side to show what they are made of by keeping themselves in the challenging pack at the top of the SPL (writes Graeme Finnan).
Yesterday’s 2-1 win over Celtic saw the Tangerines move to within two points of the Hoops, who’ve played a game more, and only three points behind leaders Rangers.

Now Craig is hoping his side can maintain the form which has seen them lose just one game from their opening 11 league fixtures this season.

He knows that will be tough, but believes he has enough ability at his disposal to keep the Old Firm in his sights.

“I’m certainly not going to tell the lads we can’t stay up there,” said Craig today.

“But it all depends on how well we play — it’s in our own hands. However, I’ve got a decent squad here and, with a little bit of luck, I’m confident we can keep the momentum going.”

Looking back at yesterday’s win, the manager again highlighted his side’s never-say-die spirit, which saw them score twice inside the final 10 minutes to claim the points and end a 10-year winless streak against Celtic.

“We’ve been on the receiving end against the Old Firm in the past when they have scored late goals, so it was good to see us getting a couple this time. We have a bit of determination and tenacity about us, which is what you need.”

The United boss had no injuries to report.

Simply fan-tastic
Dundee boss Jocky Scott was still savouring his side’s thrilling Alba Challenge Cup victory over Inverness Caley today and he raised a glass to the Dark Blue fans who followed the team to McDiarmid Park (writes Graeme Finnan).
Almost 6000 Dundee supporters packed three stands in Perth and they were treated to a cup classic as their side picked themselves off the floor from a 2-0 half-time deficit to go on and win the game 3-2.

“The support yesterday was great and it would have been a huge disappointment if we hadn’t won the cup,” said Jocky.

“We had by far the majority of fans and I’m delighted for them they were able to see their team win the trophy.

“They have stuck by us this season and have turned out in big numbers. That’s something we appreciate because I know it has cost them a lot of money.”

Jocky was also full of praise for the way his team turned around Caley’s two-goal interval lead and he’s hoping the taste of silverware can inspire them on to their No. 1 goal — the First Division title.

“It wasn’t what I said, or didn’t say at half-time. The players realised they had done nothing in the first half — they hadn’t taken part.

“But they reacted brilliantly to that after the break and that’s why we got the result we did.

“The players will have seen the difference between the two dressing-rooms at the end, so hopefully that can inspire them for the league games ahead.”

With no game now until tomorrow week, when they head north for a league clash against Ross County, the Dundee players enjoyed the rare luxury of a couple of days off.

When they return on Wednesday, Eric Paton’s knee injury will be assessed. The skipper hobbled off with 15 minutes to go yesterday, but the manager is hoping he’ll be OK for the game in Dingwall.

“Eric’s been playing with an injury for a while now. Most of the time he’s OK, but sometimes he gets twinges when he’s kicking the ball and it can be painful,” said Jocky,

Meanwhile, matchwinner Craig Forsyth limped out of McDiarmid Park with his foot swollen and he’s set to have the injury X-rayed.

Eddie has title in sights
Dundee defender Eddie Malone wants to add a First Division title medal to the Challenge Cup one he picked up after yesterday’s pulsating 3-2 final success against Inverness CT (writes James Masson).
He said, “There is a long way to go in the league. I feel the team which shows the most character will go on and win it, and we showed plenty of character to come back and win yesterday.

“If we play like we did in the first 45 in the final, we’ve no chance of winning the league, but we do if we play like we did in the second 45.

“We deserved to win the cup on our second-half display and showed great ability, as well as character, to come back.

“And the fans were brilliant again. We took 3000 to Raith and 6000 at Perth for the final.

“Their backing is a great boost and they can play a big part in helping us get to the SPL. After the second goal, they really went bananas. They were superb.

“Now, hopefully, we can go on and clinch the league title.”

Midweek return for Saints trio
St Johnstone central defender Graham Gartland has suffered a recurrence of his shoulder injury, but should be able to resume training later this week (writes James Masson).
Striker Kenny Deuchar did not train today due to injury, but is also due to train before the end of the week. The same applies to fellow-striker Steven Milne.

Steven Anderson and Kevin Moon are back in full training. Martin Hardie will have his injured knee operated on this week. After the op., Saints will have a better idea of how long he will be out.

Boss Derek McInnes is on a UEFA Pro Licence course this week in Italy, but will return to McDiarmid Park on Thursday.
