CIGARETTE CARD FEATURED DRUMMIE’S UNCLE

DRUMMOND ROBERTSON read with interest” the article “50 Years At Thomson Park” (BwB, Oct. 2), particularly as he was included in the 1964-65 side.

“It reminded me that I came across a cigarette card while going through some papers of my uncle, BERT ROBERTSON, who died recently aged 96,” said Drummond, a resident of Monifieth.

“He captained this LOCHEE UNITED JUNIORS FC side (see foot of column).

“I calculate this is around 1935 as he was born in 1912.”

On the back of the card, it reads, “Started as a juvenile club in 1912 and graduating to junior football in 1922/23, this club now plays in the Dundee Junior League.

“Since joining the latter, they have been successful in both the Courier Cup and Forfar Consolation Cup.”

THE DANNY CLINK COLLECTION : PART V. -

BIG DEREK’S BULLET HEADERS WON THE GAME

There has been several other good responses to previous “Danny Clink Collection” photos and I’ll share them with you in the coming weeks.

Moving on to our fifth instalment, it features the time when one of Dundee’s finest-ever footballers DEREK JOHNSTONE was under Danny’s wing at ST FRANCIS BOYS CLUB in the Angus Amateur under-age leagues.

Derek was only 15, but played in their U/18 team . . . and I should know as I came up against him when my Lochee Boys team met the Frannies.

Big Derek (pictured in the St Francis “hoops” at foot of column), duly won them the game with a couple of bullet headers (it might even have been a hat-trick!), totally outjumping me each time in the 3-2 success.

This despite being three years my junior — a massive age gap at that level!

In later years, I became very good friends with DJ, but have lost touch in recent years.

The photo and the letter (the original!) — and all the others — have been sent in by MARI CLINK BENEDICTUS, of Glamis Street, Dundee.

She wouldn’t mind if these items were passed on to Derek.

So, big man, I’ve tried to get in touch without success — even through several of your brothers — and if you want these wonderful momentos, then get in touch and I’ll wing them down to you.

Marie also came back on to say that many people have spoken to her about the “Danny Clink Collection”, including from as far away as Australia.

Meanwhile, my good buddy DENNIS ELDER, of Americanmuir Road, Dundee, a stalwart of Blairgowrie Juniors in his day, in addition to spells with North End and Dundee FC, was able to name most of the players in the Arnot JFC pic of 1955-56 (BwB, Oct. 23).

Dennis was aided by TOMMY ELDER, who is in the team.

Tommy (72), of Carnoustie, also played for St Joseph’s among others, and ran his own glazier business at the junction of Main Street and Dens Road in Dundee.

Sadly, word reaches me that Kenny Grant (also in the line-up), passed away just recently.

Back row (from left) — Unknown, Kenny Grant, Tommy Elder, Harry Morrison, Graham Low, Jim Melville, Kerr (first name unknown), Nelson (first name unknown), Tom Cummings, Unknown, Unknown.

Front row — Unknown, Danny Clink, George (surname unknown), Wallace (first name unknown), Alfie Simpson, Nobby Clark, unknown, Bob Clink, Unknown.

DUNCAN EDWARDS AT DENS PARK

I was in the company of MAGNUS McDONALD at the Tannadice floodlight derby earlier this month between Dundee United and Dundee.

Magnus was one of 16 lucky readers who won a competition for hospitality as part of the Evening Telegraph-sponsored game, and he revealed he had written to me before.

“I asked you if Duncan Edwards was in the Manchester United team who played Dundee at Dens in the 1950s,” he said. “You answered no, but I’m sure I saw him at Dens in another game. Does any other BwB reader remember seeing Edwards play at Dens?”

Gold, D. Anderson, W. Ness, G. Golden. Middle – DEREK JOHNSTONE in the green-and-white hoops of St Francis BC. Bottom - The letter which was sent to Danny Clink at his Kirkton Crescent home, which saw a £75 cheque exchange hands from Ibrox to St Francis BC for the services of Derek Johnstone.
