| The bingo double whammy was won by Charlie McGowan (79), of City Road, who picked up £2000 in last Wednesday’s Tele Bingo game — only four months after he won £600 on a previous bingo card.
His wheelchair-bound daughter Sandra (52), who suffered a severe stroke two years ago, was forced to leave her home and relocate to a purpose-built house in South Road, which is all on one level.
While the property was equipped for Sandra’s needs, it became apparent she would benefit from an electric front door, as she was struggling to get out and about by herself.
Charlie got in touch with Dundee City Council to ask for assistance and was shocked to discover the work would cost £6500 and the family would have to pay for the door themselves.
Along with Sandra’s children, Jamie and Yvonne, he began trying to raise the funds through charitable events.
Friends and relatives have also been kind enough to dip into their own pockets and sell raffle tickets in order to help Sandra.
“It’s just been a case of everyone working together, and we’ve been raising the money bit by bit,” Charlie explained.
In July, Charlie discovered he was the lucky winner of Tele Bingo, claiming £600 on Game 25 of the last series, and he immediately put his winnings towards the pot for Sandra’s home.
Tele Bingo operates in blocks of 36 games, so when the next series started up, Charlie received a new bingo card with his Tele — and it turned out to be the luckiest paper in the pile.
Up until last week, Sandra’s fund was £1500 short, but Charlie’s most recent winnings of £2000 in game 1 of the new series means he can finally pay for the much-needed work on her home.
“I’m still finding it hard to get over the news,” he said.
“Sandra has been struggling to come to terms with what happened to her, and she couldn’t get out of the door. This will give her back her independence.
“The whole family is thrilled after what has been a difficult couple of years.
“We’re all so happy — this money is going to make such a difference, and it’s come at just the right time.” |
