Axe falls on Tayside Thresher jobs
Almost 30 people are set to lose their jobs at six Threshers off-licences across Tayside and Fife after parent company First Quench went into administration (writes Debbie Kerr).
The news came as administrators KPMG revealed 53 Scottish stores are to be closed, among a total of 373 UK outlets.

In Dundee a total of 11 workers will be made redundant when the doors close, six of them at the Reform Street shop and five at the branch in Broughty Ferry’s Brook Street.

A spokesperson from KPMG today confirmed the job losses.

Broughty Ferry ward Councillor Rod Wallace said the closure of the Brook Street store would be a “big loss” to the local community.

“I am extremely disappointed to here about the closure, especially as it is in a crucial part of the street,” he said.

“Broughty Ferry has had a lot of good news recently with Tesco opening and several new coffee shops doing well, so it is disappointing to find out that due to the economic climate a shop of this standard is to be closed.”

He added, “Customers who use the shop get to know the staff and it is unfortunate for them to be losing their jobs.”

Six staff members at the Castle Street branch in Forfar will be made redundant, as well as four job cuts in the Leonard Street store in Perth.

A total of eight people will lose their jobs in Dunfermline, three in the East Port branch and five in the Abbey View outlet.

The six shops in Tayside and Fife are among the 247 stores that will continue to trade until November 25. A further 126 stores in the UK will continue trading until December 2.

* A giant booze sale began today with the stores earmarked for closure launching “very substantial” discounts.

Products will be heavily discounted as administrator KPMG looks to run down stock levels as the stores head for closure.
