“I’ve just seen the photo of Norrie Farquhar.
“Me and Norrie were pals in our Butterburn days.
“Then, when I moved to Canada, Norrie moved to Rochester, New York, for a wee while and I would visit him.
“When I saw his photo in BwB (Oct. 2) I thought of another photo (see photo at foot of column).
“It’s of the Butterburn team which played an Aberdeen Select at Dundee FC’s Dens Park.
“That’s Norrie in the front and me with the suit on. Jimmy Rooney is in the background along with Bruce Malcolm.
“Fond memories, indeed.
“Now, here’s one for BwB readers . . . has any Butterburn player gone on to play for Scotland?
“I remember DAVE McHARDY saying to me back in the mid-60s that he was sure somebody would eventually go on to play for the Scotland senior team.
“However, I don’t know if anyone ever did.”
Can’t think of one off hand as some legendary ’Burn players such as Hamish McAlpine and John Duncan never received full caps.
However, if you can name any, get in touch.
GREAT RESPECT
TOM McGOVERN’S pen has been doing overtime of late, as he has sent in a number of contributions to BwB.
“I was asked recently for a picture and history of ST STEVEN’S AFC, of Dundee,” said Tom, a Manchester-based Dundonian.
“Sadly, I have no photos.
“The Saints were founded by ALBERT SELINA along with his friend TOM GALLAGHER.
“They asked my dad TOM to look after the U/18 side.
“Albert and my dad were school pals at St Andrew’s School.
“Tom Gallagher was chief of time and study at NCR.
“Albert was also a noted amateur boxer and I remember he defeated Gilbert Johnston in the final of the Airlie Cup.
“He lived at the West Port, above the Scout Bar, which was owned by Oliver Hamilton — a noted football scout.
“I believe Saints consisted of some players who were formerly with the great Dunkeld Amateurs.
“I would be grateful if any BwB readers could elaborate on the history of the Saints.
“Going back to boxing, there are some notable facts for Dundee.
“One of the toughest battles in a British ring was between Dundonian Bobby Boland and Glaswegian Peter Keenan and, of course, we all remember Dick McTaggart’s great success at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
“I have great respect for the men who ran boys clubs in Dundee.”
