Cup dates confirmed
St Johnstone’s Co-operative Insurance Cup tie at home to Dundee United will go ahead on Tuesday, October 27.
Dundee v. Rangers and St Mirren v. Motherwell are scheduled for the same evening with all three ties kicking-off at 7.45 pm.

Celtic’s last-eight clash against Hearts at Parkhead, which will be screened live by the BBC, goes ahead 24 hours later with a 7.35 pm start.

United full-back fit for capital outing
Battered and bloodied Paul Dixon will be in his usual place when Dundee United travel to the capital on Saturday to face Hibs (writes Tom Duthie).
The last two weekends have seen the left-back helped from the pitch with blood streaming from facial wounds, but he will be fit to risk an unwanted hat-trick at Easter Road.

“The cut Paul got just below his eye against Motherwell opened up again when he got another bang in the face at Perth on Saturday and he also opened a fresh one above the eye,” explained boss Craig Levein.

“He’s had the original one re-stitched and a couple of stitches put in the fresh one as well. He isn’t looking too clever, but he will be OK to play at Hibs.

“We kept him away from contact in training yesterday, but he’s back with the rest of the boys today and he should not have any problems.”

Also due to return to normal work was Morgaro Gomis, who has been hampered by flu and calf problems since starring in the draw at Celtic earlier this month.

He did some work on his own yesterday and that paved the way for him to join in with most of the rest of his team-mates today.

There were a number of absentees, but only because they were seeing action as a strong reserve team took on Partick Thistle at the home of Ayrshire junior outfit Beith.

Involved in that one were Garry Kenneth, Greg Cameron, David Robertson, Ryan McCord, Jennison Myrie-Williams, Craig Conway and Andis Shala.

“It’s a bit of a journey, but it is good to be getting a game against a good standard of opposition,” added Craig.

Clarke in frame for semi
Impressive back-to-back appearances from the bench and the need to get him more game time look set to see Pat Clarke make his first competitive start when Dundee face Annan Athletic in the Challenge Cup on Sunday (writes Tom Duthie).
The start to the former Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath and Clyde striker’s Dens Park career was stalled by a groin injury, but his contribution as a sub against Aberdeen and then Ross County last week pleased boss Jocky Scott.

As usual, Jocky will keep his selection intentions under wraps until the last possible minute, but, today, he did not hide the fact Clarke was in his thoughts.

“He has done well in the last couple of games and I am aware that, in terms of game time, he is a bit behind the rest of the squad,” said Jocky.

“I’m also thinking about holding back a few of the boys who’ve played most of the games so far, because we have another big game, against Partick, next week, so using Pat from the start is something I will consider.”

Along with the other players who have not been in the starting line-up, Clarke was pencilled in for a run-out in a closed-door friendly against Hibs this afternoon.

Other names on the team-sheet included the recently re-signed keeper Derek Soutar, Chris Casement, Kyle Benedictus and Darren Young.

Missing from that action and training was centre-half Jim Lauchlan, as well as long-term absentees Rab Douglas and Colin McMenamin.

While the ankle ligament injury he suffered against Aberdeen will keep striker McMenamin out for a few more weeks, early indications are he is healing quicker than anticipated.

He was expected to be out until at least the end of October, but could be back a week or two sooner.

Closed-door outing
St Johnstone goalkeeper Graeme Smith and central defender Kevin Rutkiewicz took a big step on the road back from injury by taking part in a closed-door game today (writes James Masson).
Although they didn’t feature in that match, Peter MacDonald and Kevin Moon are upping their training as they seek to get back to full fitness.

Meanwhile, Saints are hopeful Steven Milne will return to training this week. A knee injury received against Hibs kept him out of the Dundee United game, and the Perth side are hoping he’ll be fit enough to face Hamilton away on Saturday.
