Free tickets for kids

Dundee have kicked off a series of community initiatives by handing out 1000 free tickets for tomorrow’s home clash with Inverness (writes Tom Duthie).
Under the banner of ‘Dundee FC in the Community’, which should shortly have charitable status, the briefs have gone to primary school children in the area.

“Being active in the community and getting kids and youth groups involved in the club is another key aspect of the club’s ongoing recovery,” explained director George Knight.

The club are being assisted in this new venture by Dee 4 Life and supported by other fans’ and business groups.

Statement of intent
With the league season reaching only its third week, nothing will be decided when promotion favourites Dundee and ICT clash tomorrow — but Sean Higgins believes this is an opportunity to make a big statement (writes Tom Duthie).
And if it’s the Dark Blues who do all the talking on the park, the livewire striker will be delighted at putting one over a side he used to regard as the enemy.

Higgins knows Caley’s Dens Park visit represents the biggest test so far, but, if Jocky Scott’s new-look team can produce the form they’ve shown in flashes for 90 minutes, he’s expecting a good day.

“It is a big game for both teams, because we are expected to be up at the top challenging, but there is a long, long way to go after this one, so we are not going to win promotion on the strength of this one game,” said the 24-year-old.

“What we can do, is send out a message to the rest of division that Dens is a place no-one wants to come to and that there is the talent here that means we will be up there come the end of the season.

“That makes it a must-win game for us and we will be going out to get three points.”

Having spent seven years playing his football just up the road from Caley at Ross County, he knows the opposition will be coming down from the Highlands in determined mood.

“I know a few of their boys well and they are good players who have a strong feeling for the club — they want to get back up to the Premier League this season and they’ll be looking to win this one.

“So are we, and, if we put everything together, I believe we will. Last week at Raith, we were disappointed, because, after going a goal up early on, we let things slip in the first half and that allowed them back in.

“In the second half, though, I thought we played very well and should have won. I thought it was a bit like the first game against Morton, because, in the second half, we made a lot of chances and played good football.

“What we have to do now, is do it over 90 minutes and, if we do, I think we are at a level where teams will find it hard against us.

“Nobody is going to lie down and make it easy for us — Raith showed that last week and it is down to us to produce the performances we know we can.”

Boss Jocky Scott recognises Caley are set to be one of the teams challenging at the top all season, though, with the league taking shape, he is not treating this game differently from any other fixtures.

“They are all big games and that won’t change. Their view of the league this season will be the same as ours, but this early on the main thing is picking up three points,” he said.

“We want to build a winning run here at Dens and send teams away not looking forward to the day they have to return.”

On the fitness front, Eric Paton, Gary MacKenzie, Eddie Malone and Richie Hart are all expected to recover from knocks picked up at Stark’s Park. While that would give Jocky the option of going with the same line-up as last Saturday, he is set to make a change or two and midfielder Brian Kerr looks a likely starter.

Danny can be head man
Full-back Paul Dixon has tipped new Dundee United team-mate Danny Cadamarteri to continually get the jump on SPL defences this season (writes Tom Duthie).
As the Tangerines head for St Mirren tomorrow, Dixon believes the Englishman’s aerial strength can be a potent weapon.

Cadamarteri got both goals in the opening win over Hearts on Monday and, while those strikes were with his feet, despite being only 5 ft. 9 in., his ability to win high balls caused the opposition big problems.

“Danny’s got some leap on him — I know that from training with him over the summer,” said Dixon.

“To look at he’s not the biggest, but, on Monday, he was outjumping defenders who are over six-feet tall and that’s going to be a big asset for us.

“It’s great for David Goodwillie, because he knows when the ball is played forward to Danny he can take off because there are going to be knock-ons.”

As good as the all-round performance was against Hearts, Dixon insists no-one is getting carried away and the team will work hard to make it two wins from two when they get to St Mirren Park.

“I know it’s a bit boring to say it, but we are not taking anything for granted, because we played well the other night and we are not looking any further ahead than this game.

“It was a great start, but we got it by playing well as a team and that is what the aim has to be tomorrow.

“We’re looking forward to going down there, because this will be our first visit to their new stadium and it looks a decent place to play.”

While the Buddies avoided relegation only on goal difference last term, Craig Levein is expecting a tricky first trip to the new park and does not hide his admiration for the work done by opposite number Gus MacPherson.

“Every time we play them they look a decent SPL side and Gus has them well organised. He’s also got a good goal threat from boys like Andy Dorman, Billy Mehmet and Stephen McGinn,”

“In some ways, this is more difficult than Hearts on Monday. Then we had the warning of what happened on the first day last season, it was against one of the bigger sides and it was live on television, so I knew I’d get a reaction from the players.

“This time, it is more of a bread-and-butter fixture, but, if we want to improve this season, these are the kind of games we have to do well in on a consistent basis.”

Morgaro Gomis is a doubt for tomorrow’s game after a groin strain kept the midfielder out of training today.

Something to savour
St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes said his side will “relish” the trip to face Celtic at Parkhead tomorrow (writes James Masson).
After drawing 2-2 at home to Motherwell upon their return to the SPL after a seven-year absence, Saints head for the east end of Glasgow.

“The hard work was getting into the SPL and, now we’re there, we aim to stay,” said Derek.

“We’re all really looking forward to tomorrow as these are the games you want to play in.

“We’re huge underdogs, but we take confidence from last week’s display against Motherwell.

“Our former manager Owen Coyle got a great result in midweek, leading Burnley to victory over Manchester United.

“It would be great for us to go to Parkhead and win. It’s a tall order, but we’ll be giving it our best shot.”

Chris Millar, who was with Celtic several years ago, will be added to the Saints squad provided he shows no reaction to his calf injury.

Murray Davidson won the Man-of-the-Match award for his display in Saints’ midfield against Motherwell and he’s hoping for a better result than the last time he was at Parkhead.

He played there last season for Livingston in a cup game and was on the receiving end of a 4-0 scoreline.

“It was a good experience for me and, as these are the sort of games you want to play in,” said Davidson, who moved from Livi in the close season

“I’m looking forward to a Parkhead return tomorrow.”

“It will be a difficult task, no doubt about that, but I’ll fully concentrate on my own game and hope we do well.”

Davidson, from Innerleithen in the borders, has attracted good reviews in his short time at Saints.

After playing for Leithen Vale, he joined Hibs Boys Club where he was spotted by Graeme Robertson, then on the Dunfermline coaching staff.

When Graeme moved to Livingston, he took Davidson with him and now the youngster is at McDiarmid where he is firmly focused on tomorrow’s game.
