Jocky’s striking options
Dundee boss Jocky Scott looks on course to have a full complement of strikers to choose from when he heads over to Fife to face Raith Rovers on Saturday (writes Tom Duthie).
Pat Clarke, troubled by a groin problem in the final couple of weeks of the pre-season build-up, confirmed his return to fitness this afternoon when he started a closed-door game against the Scotland Under-21 side at Dens Park.

Also scheduled for a run-out was Leigh Griffiths, although the teenager was turning out for Billy Stark’s side after initially pulling out of the national squad due to a calf knock picked up in the 1-0 win against Morton. However, with the injury cleared up, and the Dark Blues having plenty of players needing a game, Stark was delighted to welcome the 18-year-old back into the fold.

That means Griffiths and Clarke should both be in the Dundee squad for Stark’s Park, along with last Saturday’s starting front men Sean Higgins and Colin McMenamin. Also included should be Mickael Antoine-Curier, who missed the Morton win through suspension.

“As long as they suffer no reaction to playing today, Clarke and Griffiths should be fine, so I should have plenty of options up front,” said Jocky.

Choices at the back should also increase, with David Cowan also considered fit enough to line up against the young Scots.

Dundee still have former keeper Derek Soutar training with them and, should Rab Douglas fail to recover from his stomach strain in time to play on Saturday, he could again take a place on the bench.

“It is not going to be a long-term thing with ‘Soapy’, because we have three goalkeepers, but, rather than recall John Gibson from his loan at Elgin when it’s just started, I thought it was better to make use of him.

“He can be used as a trialist for three games and I know he has the experience and ability to do the job if we had to call on him.”

Although he has still to get fixed up with a club for this season, Soutar has been in talks with a couple of interested outfits from Hungary.

Nightshift for United
With boss Craig Levein determined to leave nothing to chance, the Dundee United players are in for a stint of nightshift at Tannadice later this week (writes Tom Duthie).
A new state-of-the-art floodlight system was installed at Tannadice over the summer and the switching of the opening league game against Hearts to Monday night means they’ll be in use immediately.

Accordingly, Craig has told his players to report at 8 o’clock on Thursday night for a session under the lights.

“It’s a bit different from the normal routine, but this way we can let the boys get used to the new lights and also check out if there are any problems with them to make sure they are good for Monday,” he said.

By that evening work-out, Craig expects injury-victims Danny Cadamarteri, Andy Webster, Andis Shala and David Goodwillie to be back in full training.

“By tomorrow, a few of them will be back, though I’m not sure about Goodwillie. With all of them the problems are minor and I don’t see anyone struggling to make Monday,” he added.

United still have not received a formal bid from Ipswich for midfielder Morgaro Gomis — a situation that suits the manager.

Injury concerns intensify
St Johnstone have been hit with more injury problems after Kevin Moon and Peter MacDonald suffered recurring knocks in a closed-door game against Scotland U/21s, which Saints lost 4-3 (writes James Masson).
“Peter had to come off as his hamstring injury was bothering him and Kevin is still having problems with his groin,” said boss Derek McInnes.

Steven Reynolds, who came on for MacDonald, netted two of the Saints goals with a super Martin Hardie strike also counting.

“Martin missed some pre-season games, but got 90 minutes yesterday as he builds up his fitness,” Derek added.
