Paddy’s family say thanks
We thank Tayside Police and everyone involved in the apprehension of the person who killed our son, Patrick (Paddy) McDade, the Dundee Big Issue seller.

We also thank the public for the beautiful flowers and their kindness and for the tributes in the Evening Telegraph.

We were overwhelmed with everybody’s kindness at this sad time for us. — Terence McDade (Paddy’s Dad) and Alison McDade (Stepmum).

[Paul Charles Clark admitted at the High Court in Edinburgh that he murdered Patrick McDade at his home in Brown Constable Street, Dundee, on January 17 by repeatedly striking him with a knife.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum punishment period of 11 years and three months by Lord Brailsford at the High Court in Paisley.]

Stagecoach proposal causes concern

Stagecoach: Taking over Travel Dundee?

I write to express my concern at the prospect of Stagecoach taking over Travel Dundee.

I come from Dunfermline, which is served by Stagecoach. The bus fares there are extortionate, with a single ticket to take you into Dunfermline town centre costing roughly £1.85.

I do hope that the people of Dundee stand together and keep our buses the way they are.

No, it’s not perfect, but based on price and service, it is just as good as anything Stagecoach can offer. Maybe Travel Dundee could expand into Fife/Dunfermline as they would be greatly received with their £2.70 day ticket. — Mrs Danielle Ross, Balunie Avenue, Dundee.

Digital action?
I read with interest the letter from Andrew Scott, the press officer for Dundee SNP.

He said city representatives are taking very seriously the threat to the Scottish computer games industry.

In the past, Dundee’s MSP Joe FitzPatrick and Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie have said they think the Dundee taxi trade gets a raw deal, yet we still are waiting for some direct action. So, if I was employed in the games industry in Dundee, I would not hold my breath.

The SNP are going to have to start putting their words into action or they will not stay in administration long. — Taxi Driver.

Key figure
Who put the Americans on the moon? Why is it that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin get all the credit and publicity for landing on the moon 40 years ago?

We are not told anything about the key man who was the brains behind the successful moon landing.

He was Werhner von Braun, the German rocket expert who developed flying bombs used against the UK in the Second World War.

Would Americans have managed to put astronauts on the moon without his aid? — Ron Smith, Dundee.

Bingo night
The 22nd Scout Group is holding a fundraising bingo night in Lennons Bar, Dundee, tomorrow at 7.30pm. This is in aid of funds for their forthcoming trip to Austria. — Stuart Ramsay, Contingent Leader.
Eyes down
There is a bottle/money bingo and prize draw in aid of Balcarres Sheltered Housing Tenants’ Comfort Fund in the Douglas Sports and Recreation Club, Balmoral Terrace, on Wednesday. Eyes down 8pm. All welcome. — Wardens.

Why deny children housing?
I write in response to Angry Taxpayer who wrote of his/her shock regarding the recent purchases of private houses by Dundee City Council and Hillcrest Housing Association.

I am lucky enough to live in a bought home yet do not have the same views regarding this issue.

Undoubtedly these three or four bedroom homes are being allocated to families with children.

Why should children be denied decent housing because their parents can’t afford their own “luxury” home?

Would Angry Taxpayer prefer that these children live in old and damp council houses with small bedrooms and crammed living conditions?

With four million children in the UK suffering from poverty, this scheme should be welcomed. — Stop the Bitterness.

Dog attacked
On her way to work one morning last week, my sister witnessed what can only be described as a sickening, horrific attack on a defenceless dog by a man and woman in Dundee.

My sister told the man she was going to inform the police.

What is wrong with people that they think it is acceptable to attack their pets like this?

I am disgusted and deeply saddened by this. — Animal Lover.

Does Diageo need public cash?
At first glance First Minister Alex Salmond’s plan to offer Diageo public money to save Scottish jobs is a noble move.

It is also to be remembered that Diageo has profits running into billions of pounds so does not need taxpayers’ money.

Also, Diageo believes this move will enable them to make massive cost savings.

I suspect this is money Holyrood doesn’t really have to spare.

Even if it did, Diageo has now signalled it is merely a temporary solution. — Holyrood Watcher.
