Royal visitors excite Hart
Playing a friendly after the competitive action has started may be unusual, but Richie Hart believes Dundee’s clash with Royal Antwerp tonight will be a useful run out (writes Tom Duthie).
The midfielder was one of the stars as the Dark Blues got the campaign under way with a 5-0 Co-Op Cup thrashing of Stranraer on Saturday.

And while that means he is unlikely to begin tonight, he will be more than happy if he gets a chance to face the Belgians (KO 7.30).

“It’s going to be a step up from Saturday and it should be an opposition that is sharp and dangerous,” he said.

“You can learn from these teams in terms of passing and movement — we found that out when we played Monchengladbach in Austria and that is the way the manager wants us to play.

“I’m not sure what the team is going to be, but it will be a good exercise and you know against these teams that if you lose the ball you are going to work very hard to get it back.”

And with Jocky Scott’s new-look squad still coming together, Hart believes it was right to take on this game to complete the build-up to Saturday’s First Division opener against Morton at Dens.

“It will help the team gel more, but it’s already been good on that score since I arrived and the boys have bonded well.

“It has to be said most of us knew each other already, so, from that point of view, it’s been easy to do, but it is good things have gone so well and it is nice for the fans to see we are together in what we want to do.”

The manager has confirmed his starting line-up will contain mainly players who did not start against Stranraer and is hopeful three of the injured quartet of Craig McKeown, Gary MacKenzie, Pat Clarke and David Cowan will take some part.

“I don’t think McKeown will make it, but we’ll check on all of them before kick-off and see how they are,” said Jocky.

“Even if they can get 15 or 20 minutes, it would be good because it’s been a couple of weeks since Clarke and Cowan have been available.”

Jocky, meanwhile, was delighted to see three of his players called up for various international squads over the past few days.

“We’ve got Chris Casement in the Northern Ireland U/21 squad for a game against Portugal, Leigh Griffiths going to a Scotland U/21 get-together and Kyle Benedictus doing likewise with the U/19s.

“That’s good news and it has been a while since this club has had three players involved with international squads.”

Cadamarteri concern
Dundee United gaffer Craig Levein is hopeful the curse on his strikers has not struck again after Danny Cadamarteri limped out of yesterday’s 100th birthday game draw with Newcastle (writes Tom Duthie).
A deliberate kick on his calf, courtesy of Toon defender Ryan Taylor, meant the Yorkshireman did not appear for the second half.

While Cadamarteri was sidelined by the knock for training today, his manager believes he won’t be joining fellow-attackers Francisco Sandaza, Damian Casalinuovo, Jon Daly and Kevin Smith on the long-term injury list.

“He basically has a dead leg down on his calf and, while it will be a problem for the next couple of days, I think it should clear as the week goes on,” said Craig.

“I certainly hope so because the last thing we need is another injured striker.”

Although his front men have been dropping like flies, Craig has been delighted with the increase in his options at the back and in midfield.

Yesterday saw loan signing from Rangers, Andy Webster, have his best game yet at centre-back and moving up to midfield, the manager is happy with the competition for places there.

“I was pleased with Webster’s performance and with him it is a case of staying fit and getting games under his belt. The more he plays, the more confidence he is going to get,” he added.

“I was also happy with the work Craig Conway put in when he came on for the second half.

“We have more strength in depth in that area this season and I think Craig realises that to continue to be a regular first-team player he is going to have to be at his best on a consistent basis.

“The others in midfield are in exactly the same situation because we have strengthened over the summer.

“It’s the same at the back and once we start getting the strikers back fit the same will apply there.”

On Saturday, Joe Collins continued his impressive trial spell by grabbing a double as a young United side beat juniors Penicuik.

No call-up
St Johnstone have received no word from the Trinidad & Tobago FA so it looks like they are not considering striker Collin Samuel for their international match next midweek (writes James Masson).
Collin has been in recent T&T squads and his non-inclusion means he won’t have to play just days before Saints’ opening SPL match at home to Motherwell.

Steven Milne was taken off against Stenhousemuir due to a groin knock, but is expected to recover in time to face Burnley at home on Saturday. Chris Millar (calf), Martin Hardie (hamstring) and Graeme Smith (thigh), plus Kevin Moon and Peter MacDonald, are on the mend.
