| Kenny Gorthy, Joe Birmingham, Ronnie Grieve and Bob Whyte were Timex apprentices in the 1970s and believe it’s time to forget the bitterness that surrounded the company’s latter years in Dundee.
“I was at Timex from 1974 to 1983 and it was absolutely brilliant, it really was,” said Kenny. “It was like a big family, especially at the apprentice training school, because you had 90 guys aged 16 to 19. Once you hit 19 you were sent into the big wide world to one of the factories.”
At the funeral, Kenny met former colleagues he hadn’t seen in more than a quarter of a century.
“We got talking and said it shouldn’t take a funeral to get us all together and we should do something, maybe have a reunion,” he said.
“It is just going to be an apprentices’ reunion to start with, but where it goes from there, who knows?
“Personally, I’d particularly like to hear from my old mate Dougie Wallace. I think he’s moved away from Dundee itself, but still lives in the area.”
