In response to Politico regarding the future of digital industries in Dundee, I can assure readers that the city’s representatives are taking very seriously the threat to the Scottish computer games industry from the recent UK Government report, ‘Digital Britain’.
It is outrageous that a report, while praising the excellent work of Abertay University and the Dundee-based games industry, should suggest setting up a rival centre in Salford.
Dundee’s MSP Joe FitzPatrick and Dundee East MP Stewart Hosie have already written separately to UK Government Ministers demanding they cancel this potentially disastrous initiative which could threaten the fragile Scottish gaming industry.
I am aware that Councillor Will Dawson, Convenor of the City Development Department at Dundee City Council, has also made strong representations to various UK Government Ministers on the issue.
It is highly concerning that public money might be spent to create a competitor to the world-leading centre which has developed in Dundee, but Dundee’s SNP politicians can be relied upon to stand up for the city in the face of this threat from the UK Government. — Andrew Scott, Press Officer, Dundee SNP Parliamentary Office, Dundee.
People can help beat gull problem
I wish the minority of people in Dundee, who continually choose to throw food out and encourage vermin seagulls to drop their faeces everywhere, would stop. Maybe they don’t mind living in an environment coated with stinking bird droppings, but I am sure majority do not.
Bin your waste and how about putting your rubbish out in bags properly tied off for a change, too?
I’m sick and tired of spending money on window cleaning and car washing.
Please buy a bird feeder if you have the urge to befriend the local avian population.
Its about time Dundee City Council started giving fixed penalty charges to these persistent anti-social people. — Clean Living, Dundee.
Too easy to talk of a cull
Do we have a problem with gulls and pigeons or just a littering population with no respect for, or knowledge of, the behaviour of our city birds?
Where are the large covered wheelie bins if bags are being burst open by birds in Dundee City Centre?
Why not encourage the people to dispose of their rubbish appropriately and have all bins with swing lids?
Why not educate the children to respect other creatures and be knowledgeable about their behaviour?
Health is maintained initially by people taking responsibility for their own actions.
The diversity of nature should be valued. It is too east to talk of a cull.
Education could make a real difference to this ongoing problem. — Lochee Wifie.
Good reason to fake landings
I reply to John Smith’s letter regarding the authenticity of the moon landings.
Why would Nasa fake the Apollo mission? I think the main reason the US Government and Nasa faked the ‘official record’ is because they could not be seen to be the weak link, especially when you consider that during the 60s, the USA were at the height of the Cold War with Russia.
Also John F. Kennedy had forecast that before the end of the 60s man would be on the moon. It would be better to try and fool the public and hoax the footage, rather than let their biggest rival strike a huge moral victory by beating them to the moon. — Walter Mitty.
Who is special?
I heard a prominent local politician on a radio phone-in last Sunday talking about the “ordinary people” of Dundee.
Well, I’ve always thought the people of Dundee, and everywhere else for that matter, were special. If he thinks they are ordinary, does he think that he is some sort of special being, above the people?
That’s the way it looks to me. — Dundee Reader.
Drug comments
Regarding comments by Dundee councillor Jimmy Black about drug users feeling horrified to think they have led to the infection of a small child.
Why then do they just disregard and throw away their needles anywhere?
If they had any regard for children they would be putting needles somewhere safe where kids wouldn’t be able to get a hold of them. — Anonymous.

With the jobless total in Scotland standing at 179,000, up 35,000 in the last quarter, unemployment, or the fear of it, is a major worry for many Scots.
