Council rejects claims of cash shortage for repairs
Dundee City Council has rejected a claim by one if its housing tenants that there is “no budget left” to fix faulty guttering at her property (writes Alison Graves).
Mrs Moira Barrie, from the Brackens area, told the Tele she has had “constant problems” with the guttering at both the front and rear of her house, but has been left to deal with the problem herself.

She said she contacted the council in the hope of having the problems resolved, but was taken aback to be told the local authority had no money left in the pot for such work.

This was despite the fact the council was less than a third of the way through the current financial year.

“They told me they’re not doing any guttering repairs because there’s no money left in the budget,” said Mrs Barrie (57).

“I’m obviously worried about this. Considering all the rain of late it could easily penetrate into my home and cause damp if repairs aren’t carried out.”

A city council spokeswoman denied any suggestion that there was no cash left in the local authority’s coffers to fund the repair work.

The spokeswoman said there were “no problems” with the council’s maintenance and repair budget for 2009/10.

As far as the problems at Mrs Barrie’s house are concerned, the spokeswoman added, “We are aware of this problem and we will be looking into it.”
