FATHER AND SON WIN SAME TROPHY – 70 YEARS APART!

Dundee primary school HILLSIDE recently won the Junior Sports Cup, with school janitor GED DILLON coaching the side.

And, amazingly, his father BEN was especially tickled at the success as he also won the trophy back in 1939 when a pupil at St Mary’s Lochee Primary School.

Ben popped into the Menzieshill school recently to be reunited with the trophy, and was joined by Monifieth’s JOHN McINALLY, the only other surviving member of the team.

John, of course, has featured prominently in BwB in recent months.

The two gentlemen still have their original medals (seen in the picture)

Dundee Primary Schools FA secretary GERRY DIGNAN was delighted at the revelation, and commented, “To my knowledge, it is still the same trophy being played for 70 years on.

“Each winning team’s name is engraved on the cup (except for the odd one missing.)

“The trophy was re-dipped and renovated a few years ago as it was looking rather dilapidated.

“A plinth was added with a metal band to engrave from then on as the engraving was causing the tarnishing to worsen.”

NOMINATIONS FOR DAVE’S SELECT ROLLING IN

DAVE SMITH’S idea for a compilation of the best junior and amateur players (BwB, July 10) which could be formed into a select side brought an immediate response from DAVE MILLAR, himself well-known in the local amateur game, and who played or officiated with NCR, Harris, Violet and Maryfield among others.

“I offer the following Midlands Amateurs players,” he opened, “As a team, you could not pass NCR’s side of the 1960s, which won the Scottish Cup and everything locally.

“However if the criteria is individuals, I offer the following names for consideration — HARRY FLEMING, JOE OGILVIE, JIMMY DUNCAN and ALEX BALMER (NCR), Ricky NICOL, BOBBY BROWN, EDDIE FINDLAY and JIMMY BURKE (Harris FP), and CHARLIE ADAM, DAVIE ANDERSON and KENNY McDONALD (Timex).

“From the Auchterhouse team, there was DAVE TOSNEY, GRANT McLEAN, DANNY ROSS and JIMMY MILNE, Riverside duo JACKIE DEVINE and GARY LAMONT, and Broughty United’s JACKIE KNIGHT.

“These players spanned the 1960s-80s era and I apologise to the many great players I have omitted.

“My team boss would be the legendary JOE McFADYEN, who I had the pleasure of working with during his tenure as boss of Harris FP in the early 80s.

“In the Juniors, my list would include Osborne duo BILLY COOPER and CHARLIE LOVE, GORDON WALLACE (North End), JOHN MARKIE (Harp), PETER MARKIE (Violet), MIKE McMANUS (Harp), DAVE BAIKIE, IAIN ROSS, RAY McKINNON and WILLIE CASWELL (Lochee Utd.), STEVE STEWART, GRANT PATERSON, DAVE REILLY (Tayport), CHARLIE ADAM (Downfield) and KENNY JONES, JACKIE DEVINE (St Joseph’s).

“My team boss would be Dave Baikie.”

Carnoustie’s JIMMY BROWN, formerly of Hilltown, Dundee, also mentioned many of the above players, but added, “Goalscoring machine RONNIE MITCHELL, of Riverside, was virtually impossible to stop when in full flow.

“So was RAB McLAREN, who scored many goals with every club he played for.

“In the Juniors, I always enjoyed watching PATTIE O’ROURKE when he was with BLAIRGOWRIE and CARNOUSTIE,” he said.

“Pattie first caughT my eye when he played with the famous Dundee Juvenile side LOCHEE RENTON.

“I just kept following his progress.

“Of course, from that Renton club came striker JIMMY JACK, who went on to achieve legendary status with Arbroath.

“There were many other great players in that Renton team.

“What about GILLBURN RANGERS, too, with all the REILLYS — PETER, JIMMY, JOHN and GEORGE.

“In the Juniors, BOBBY FITCHET surely deserves a mention for his lengthy spell with ST JOSEPH’S.”

ERIC DARGIE’S contribution was short and straight to the point, commenting, “One of the best inside forwards in the Angus Amateur FA was Les Patterson.”

POLO FEAT HASN’T BEEN MATCHED

MENZIESHILL LADIES’ 1984 British Water Polo Cup-winning team recently held a 25-year anniversary reunion dinner in the Queens Hotel, Dundee.

They were the first (and remain the only!) Scottish club to win that championship, winning the trophy by defeating cup holders Runnymede 10-5 at Pringle Pool, Nuneaton.

In our photo below, preparing to cut the anniversary cake are (back row, from left) — Edna Ritchie, Evelyn Gilbert, Annette Monie, Karen Shepherd, Frank Jordan (coach).

Front — Pam Short, Debbie Henderson, Aileen Henderson, Gillian Moncrieffe, Arlene Kelly and Cheryl Duncan.
