| The incident happened at the Stack Leisure Park in Lochee around 2.50am, when Forrester McKelvie stopped to drop off three men, who then demanded his cash.
He refused and a struggle broke.
They grappled with Mr McKelvie but he fought them off and the men ran away empty-handed.
“I’m a big guy and it wasn’t as easy as they thought it would be,” Mr McKelvie said.
Police said today they were following “positive lines of enquiry”.
The driver picked up the men outside Fat Sam’s and Liquid in South Ward Road and they asked to be taken to St Mary’s.
On the way, one of them become abusive and asked to be taken to the Stack Leisure Park.
“The guys were drunk and had a wee bit of a carry on when they got in the car,” Mr McKelvie said.
“One guy was in the front and the other two in the back. The one in the front was a bit nippy and abusive.
“The guy in the front paid the fare then the one in the back said, ‘Money’. I said, ‘Your mate’s just paid it’. He said, ‘No, your money’.
“The guy in the front then said, ‘I want your money’.
“I said, ‘No, you’re not getting my money.’
“He said, ‘No, I’m getting your money for the privilege of having me in your car.’
“The guy in the front then took a swipe at me and caught me in the chest.
“So I hit him back and I don’t think he was expecting that. One of the guys in the back tried to get at me as well and there was a scuffle.
“I got out of the car and the scuffle continued. It was just a wee fracas.
“I was fighting them off and I had the upper hand because they were drunk.
“They thought they would take a chance and get my money but I wasn’t having that.”
Following the struggle, Mr McKelvie got back in his cab to report the incident and then a silver sports car driving out of the park carrying three people.
