Swine flu not such big risk
I READ Lee MacKay’s swine flu two-page special with great interest. However, as an older reader, I was surprised that I am in an “at risk” category.

I understand that the over 65s seem to have a natural immunity to this strain of flu.

Experts like Professor Hugh Pennington have suggested that previous exposure to a similar flu virus, like the epidemic of 1957, have left my generation with greater resistance to catching this deadly bug.

Of course, I realise that the older, and perhaps more frail, members of society are at greater risk from swine flu if they are unlucky enough to catch it.

But that is equally true of any flu bug and many other infections. — Hardy Annual, Dundee.

Let others contribute
I accept the need to have troops in Afghanistan to counter terrorism, however, it should be a United Nations initiative and not just an alliance of some nations.

There are 42 nations represented. Next to the USA we are the second largest group with more than 8000 troops.

When one breaks down the figures it becomes obvious many are just providing a token force.

We’ve eight times the number Australia have, four times that of Canada, more than France and Germany combined, four times that of Italy. Most countries send fewer than a thousand troops. Some send fewer than 10.

Why are we asking for more UK troops to be sent? Surely the other nations should be asked to send larger contingents. No wonder we’re losing so many young men. — Dyke.

Call for extended access
Although a lot of money was designated to upgrade Dundee’s Baxter Park, not much thought was given for access to toilet facilities.

Until recently these could only be used by the public when the park attendant was available. People with children viewed this regulation as unacceptable.

Due to the persistence of Maryfield councillors and members of the public complaining, a public toilet is now available between 10.15am-5.55pm. During the summer months, the park is busy and we ask that these times be extended to 8pm.

We also have concerns about dogs being unleashed around the children’s area. The play parks are the only place children can play safely while the remainder of the park seems to be allocated for dogs to run freely.

Most dog owners are responsible and we ask the others to allow our children to safely enjoy playing in the park. — Baxter Park Campaigners.

Queue after queue
While walking in to the town the other day, I went to use the lift in the Wellgate.

However, when I arrived at the top of the centre, I was met with a big queue at the lift.

I decided to walk down the ramp — however you can only go to the second floor where again, I was met with another huge queue at the lift.

The people who were waiting were able bodied and could use the escalator.

However, with a pram and a young baby we were unable to do so.

So after waiting 20 minutes, I decided to go back up to the top as the lift seemed to be full by the middle level.

We then had to wait in the queue.

All of this just to get through the centre. — Disgruntled Pram Pusher.

No beer market
I WAS disappointed to hear the German Beer Market will not take place this year.

This was one of the better things Dundee City Council has done in recent years to attract visitors. — Empty Glass.

Too much cruelty
I WAS shocked to see the beautiful Jack Russell dumped at Perth’s South Inch.

I can only imagine what pain that poor dog must have been suffering.

I hope they catch the culprit and name and shame him or her. That person should be jailed and fined.

There is too much animal cruelty.

If you can’t look after an animal or love it, you should not own one.

I live in Perth and am ashamed that this happened in our town. — Animal Lover.

MPs’ jobs
THERE is much discussion about the rights and wrongs of Members of Parliament taking other jobs.

If they do not have work experience how can they understand the difficulties faced by their constituents?

On the other hand it is argued being an MP should be a full-time job and they should be committed fully to serving their constituents. The solution could be to accept only those over 35 as full-time MPs. — William W. Scott.

Superb circus
I WENT to see Zippos circus at Montrose.

It was a superb evening’s entertainment with amazing high wire acts and beautiful performing horses. It was a treat for all who attended and the applause for ringmaster Norman Barret and company was deafening. — George Aimer, Kinghorne Road, Dundee.

Too hot
I WISH Stagecoach would turn off the heaters in hot weather.

Today my bus from Seagate to Carnoustie was like a furnace. Unfortunately this seems to be the norm in summer. — A. Lobster.
