Tangerines eye striker
Dundee United are eyeing up the possibility of bringing in a foreign striker (writes Graeme Finnan).
The front man, believed to be from Argentina, featured for the Tangerines in Saturday’s round-robin tournament at Oban.

And, although gaffer Craig Levein was staying tight-lipped today on the player’s identity, he did confirm he would be training with the United squad this week.

United are in the market for a goal-getter following last week’s news that Francisco Sandaza won’t feature at the start of the season after undergoing hernia surgery, while Irishman Jon Daly (knee) and Kevin Smith (ankle) recover from long-term injuries.

Another trialist, a young midfielder also featured at the weekend, as the Tangerines finished third of the six teams involved.

“The main purpose was to give everyone a run and we were able to do that,” said Craig.

“We had loads of supporters up there and we were treated very well. It’s a very friendly atmosphere and I think everyone had a good time.”

United continue their pre-season build-up with a game against Dunfermline at East End Park tomorrow night and the manager expects Garry Kenneth and Morgaro Gomis will be fit enough to play.

Both were ruled out of the Oban tourney as defender Kenneth had an injection for a knee problem on Friday, while midfield man Gomis had been suffering from a bout of tendonitis.

Lee Wilkie, meanwhile, continues to make good progress after having a tidy-up operation on his knee at the end of the season.

“With Lee’s history, we have to be careful, but I would expect him to be able to join in with the rest of the lads over the next few weeks,” added Craig.

The United boss confirmed that keeper Derek Soutar had spent a couple of days with the club last week after the former Dundee man’s request for training facilities was granted.

Dee confirm camp games
Dundee have finalised details of their pre-season training camp in Austria (writes Graeme Finnan).
The Dark Blues head off for their week-long stay on Thursday morning and will be in action on Saturday against Austrian lower league outfit SV Hallwang.

Next up is a game against German Bundesliga 2 outfit FC Augsburg a week tomorrow.

Manager Jocky Scott scrapped a planned bounce game among the squad on Saturday.

“The lads had put in a good week’s training and had done everything we asked of them, so I decided to give them the weekend off,” explained the manager.

Chris Casement continues to recover from an ankle injury, while Leigh Griffiths was again an absentee due to a cold and his inclusion in the party that travels to Austria is now in doubt.

Meanwhile, Mickael Antoine-Curier featured for an hour as Guadeloupe went down 2-0 to Mexico at the CONACAF Gold Cup.

However, the Gwada Boys had already qualified and meet Costa Rica on Sunday in the quarter-finals, and Curier’s chance of involvement in that one may have improved as his replacement last night, Ludovic Gotin, was sent off.

Back at Dens, the club have installed a temporary ice pool to cool players down after training-ground stints and help them recover quicker when they pick up knocks.

However, the manager has, so far, refrained from dipping his toe in the water. “There is nothing wrong with my legs,” laughed Jocky.

Derek denies Keigan link
St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes said there is “nothing in” stories linking the club with a move for their former striker Keigan Parker, who is presently with Huddersfield (writes James Masson).
Meanwhile, the Perth club are hoping to have another look at the trialist striker who netted the only goal of the game as they defeated Rushden and Diamonds 1-0 at their Warwick training base.

“I was pleased with the way we played. It was a sound performance and nice to get a clean sheet,” said Derek.

Saints have arranged closed-door games for tomorrow and Thursday and they’re hoping Kevin Moon and Andy Jackson will be able to step up their training this week as they recover from injury and illness respectively.

Peter MacDonald is also working his way back to full fitness, although sprinting is out for him at the moment.
