Denise Hendry, the Dundee-born wife of former Scotland footballer Colin Hendry, has died at Salford Royal Hospital, near Manchester.
Forty-two-year-old Mrs Hendry had been battling a serious brain infection, similar to meningitis, after undergoing a recent operation to correct damage caused by botched cosmetic surgery.

Mrs Hendry had been suffering from severe health problems after undergoing liposuction to remove excess fat from her stomach seven years ago at a hospital, near Preston.

The mother-of-four was put on a life support machine and spent two months recovering from in intensive care.

Following her recovery, the Hendry family took legal action against the surgeon and there was an undisclosed six-figure settlement in 2006.

Mrs Hendry underwent corrective surgery at Royal Preston Hospital in 2007, and although the 16-hour operation was deemed a success, she contracted a meningitis-type infection in her spinal cord, which spread to her brain.

She has been in intensive care since the surgery and her husband Colin, who started his career with Dundee and went on to play for Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Rangers, has kept a bedside vigil throughout her harrowing ordeal.

Born and raised in Dundee, Mrs Hendry met Colin when the 18-year-old Dundee FC defender walked into the hairdressing salon where she worked.

The pair starting dating and got married at St Leonards and St Fergus Church in the city in June 1987.

They went on to have four children, Rheagan, Kyle, Callum and Nhaimh, and live in Lytham St Anne’s.

A spokeswoman for Dundee FC said, “Our deepest sympathies go out to the family.

“They have got young children and it must be a very traumatic time for them.”
