Five-month wait for shower at home

An elderly Dundee woman who has survived cancer, several heart attacks and suffers chronic ill health can’t get a proper wash (writes Marjory Inglis, medical reporter).
Sadie Clark (76), who got the keys to her new home in Hill Street at the end of April, has been told it will be September before a shower is fitted and other adaptations made to allow her full use of her bathroom.

“I have not had a bath for about 23 years because I can’t get in one,” said Mrs Clark.

She has been relying on visits to her daughter to get a proper wash, but has to crawl upstairs on all fours to get to the shower there.

While that is far from ideal, it is not an option at all for the next two weeks, as her daughter is on holiday.

Mrs Clark has a long list of medical conditions, including arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, stomach ulcers, an under-active thyroid and severe vision impairment. She also has a condition that causes a twisting of her spine and a stoop, and said she had lost several inches in height.

Mrs Clark takes 19 pills a day for her various conditions and needs help to get around. She said, “I walk with a three-wheeled walker which I call my ‘hurdy gurdy’.”

Her health problems made it necessary to move from her former home, which had stairs to the ground floor.

When she saw her new house, she loved the spacious kitchen and dining room and accepted the offer.

“It is just magic,” said Mrs Clark. “I wish I had got it 10 years ago.”

But the downside is she has difficulty manoeuvring her walker to get in to the bathroom, is unable to use the bath and suffers from the lack of a shower.

“The architect has been up to see what she could do and they are going to put in a sliding door,” she said.

“I almost had a fit when I was told it would be September, but the good news is I am getting a shower.”

A spokesman for Dundee City Council said, “Mrs Clark asked for an assessment of her suitability to have a shower installed within a few days of moving in.

“That assessment was carried out and it was recommended that a walk-in shower be installed.

“Architects then visited to take measurements etc, and the next stage will be to carry out the work.

“At present, there are quite a few people waiting for similar adaptations and we are getting through the list as quickly as possible.”
